    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Which one would yield the most money? Last week, on my way home from work, my bike gave out on me and I feel like it's something in the engine. I don't want to spend the time or money on yanking the engine out to try to fix something that might be wrong, so I'm stuck between parting it out or letting someone else try to figure it out. Apart from whatever just happened, everything else is in good shape.

Maybe you should ACTUALLY TELL US what just happened and show some pics. That may help someone make a more informed decision or response.

Maybe you should knock off the attitude right out of the gate.

Hard to tell exactly what happened. Started off missing and rattling then progressively got worse until I heard a loud bang and it died. Now it'll start, but the whole bike shakes more than it used it.

There are several members around, maybe one of them might be willing to come take a look, I would but have so much going on it would be a long while. Could be several things, at least try to figure it out before you make up your mind. terrylee

Well your first post on the subject left a lot of info out......

Actually it gave no info really....

left me scratching my head on what the problems might be...

I wasn't asking for information about what went wrong with my bike. I was looking for general experiences on parting out vs selling as a project. That's actually why I titled it "Sell as a project or part out", not "Help me figure out what happened to my bike"

OK

sell it or try to

if not part it out

either way your first post was vague to even formulate that much...

whatever...

.

Part it. Doesn't look worth saving. A lot of work. Not much money. Exhaust has some value. Carbs. Bike looks pretty rough but you never know what someone might need. There are quite a few 450 aficionados around here so you might get luck.

sorry guess I misunderstood too. Part it out if money is what you want. terrylee

i have a guy who seems to like the 450's and has a few of them.
he may be interested in yours for parts....just depends on the price.
just be aware the value will be low.
if you part it out you may make a few extra bucks at the expense of turning wrenches and running to the post office over and over again.
your call really.
6 of one...half dozen of the other.

I just have no desire to go through the trouble of pulling the engine (especially when one exhaust bolt is already snapped off), and putting the time and money into figuring out what's wrong, fixing it, and putting it all back together when the whole bike isn't worth $1500.

Parting it out would probably get you the most dough.(maybe $5-600, tops) However, that'd involve you tearing it to bits, and since you'd be doing that anyway, have you considered buying a motor.

It isn't worth $150 let alone that amount.

It's far from being in good shape. Probably easiest and quickest to sell it for scrap value, or barring that, part it and try to make a few hundred off of what's left.

Hey Mike..not an attitude..its a POINT!!! Guys come on and they make then very same post like you did without any info and ask for an opinion..I say buy the happy meal. Other than that, if you had made a half azzed attempt at a description of the problem, I wouldnt have responded the way I did.

Oh and the part about "not help me fix my bike"...well if perspective project buyer doesn't at least have a clue as "to what happened" how are they to make a decision if they want the entire bike or not??? See our points now?????

Parting it would make a little bit of money, for a lot of time and effort. End up with a bunch of crap nobody wants. Fixing it sounds expensive, unless you find a used engine for cheap.

Cut your losses, sell it as is to someone who needs parts, or a project. Won't make much but it will be done. Even running it isn't worth much so no big loss either way.

All up to you.

Fixed .

Ignitor = $50
Carbs = $50
Exhaust = $50
Tank = $25
Brake system = $25
Misc parts = ? Maybe another $100 but it will take some time.

A lot of work to break down the bike, take photos, advertise and answer questions, box and post, etc. Not a whole lot of payback on that work.

i agree with blowerbike... there's $$ in parts (' have a look on ebay,eh)but it's a job and you may find you turn into a pro...looking for MORE bikes to eviscerate... and, you will live with the bike "expanded" into boxes all over your space and WHO will buy the gristle that's left after the alpha-scavengers have carried off the tasty bits?...will you die unwashed and unshaven in a stinking pile of scrap waiting for the right buyer to pay a "fair" price?

selling it As a broken bike, you quickly just slash and slash again the price until someone carts it away. Out of sight, out of mind.

Scrap, you just drop it off with the title, bill of sale, ect. Quick down and dirty...
