    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Sheared starter clutch bolts, suggestions

I have bought a few different bits, but nothing seems to penetrate these broke off bolts. Must be stainless. My starter clutch seems fine, aside from the sheared bolts. If I get these out, I could be riding today. :D What drill bits should I get for the job???
 
Colbalt bits maybe? I do know you want to drill slowly and with lubrication. I'd center punch the bolt first so you start near the center.
 
If the bolts have sheared off they should still unscrew easily unless they have been installed with thread lock. Try a small torch to burn off the thread lock then see if they move. Dar

This was the key, slowing down the speed of drill press. I put it on the slowest setting, I think around 700 RPM's, and just used steady pressure and lube. I was able to repair my starter clutch by just replacing the three M8 bolts. I made a gasket with one of the templates for the mag cover. While I had the carbs off to remove the starter, I slapped some 120 main jets in the VM29's. The carbs had 112.5's from the PO. The stock setting for these carbs for the GS1000 is 115. My girl is running pretty good now. Also a big thanks to Don-lo for a starter. This site rocks. I could not have done this work with out the knowledge of the members here. Now I can send back the new starter clutch that I ordered when it arrives. :D
 
Uhmmmm I wouldnt do that just yet...As i TOLD you before when you started this, simply repairing the starter clutch is AT BEST a temporary fix. There is more to it than just some bolts loosening. The metal housing gets out of round, and lets those pushers out of the house and into your oil passages. Ive FOUND the bits of spring in my oil pan from where it happened to mine. I suggest you REPLACE the starter clutch, not just try to bandaid it. If ya dont, you just MIGHT end up with that noisy crank you thought you had to begin with...

Really!!! I mean it doesn't look bad, it seems to work fine. You got me nervous, I don't want any round steel thingies finding their way into the motor. I guess I will just go ahead and replace it. A new gasket is coming with the starter clutch as well, so why not. Better not take any chances. ;)
