So I've been needin' to get new tires for my GS1100G: 100/90-19 and 130/90-17.
I like sticky tires that will give me fast cornering. I've been looking at many many reviews for these brands: Bridgestone BT 45V, Avon Roadrider, Kenda Challenger, Shinko 712 and 230. :-k I've worn out a set of the BT 45's and the Kenda's, both good tires for sport touring. ;)
However, on Bikebandit the tire with the most reviews, and from the most qualified riders concerned with good cornering is the Shinko 712. Freak out, it's also the most inexpensive! After my AMA discount the set was only $90!
Too good to be true, right! So I read and read but finally got the Shinkos.
Mounted them today, but it's too rainy to give 'em a test. Will follow up with my own opinion later.

Thought the 230's are the performance version? V-rated anyway. At any rate, please post back after you get a chance to put some miles on them.:)

You do know that no tire test is complete without a RAIN test?

Tested in bitter cold?

Tested in bitter cold?

Well it was dry today, but bitter cold. Only 20?F or -7?C.
How can you get tires warm in that, I dunno? So a fair test is not possible. But I did a 25 mile ride and the tires were smooth, I think I balanced them good.
Right out of the garage it was easy to lockup the front tire and skid, but after the 25 miles I tried the same hard breaking and they gripped real good, no lockup or skidding.
I'm not sure any tire should be trusted in bitter cold for hard cornering plus there was ice in the low spots of the road. But I did do some low speed donuts and again the tires felt real smooth. Looks like I got the chicken strips down to 1/2".

Steve, as for testing brand new tires in the rain, you can try that yourself, and please report back to us from the hospital.

Like Iv'e been saying for the price you can't beat them... They are great, I have ridden on them in the Rain, and even snpw (yes snow) and I can say I'm still impressed. I think I paid $120.00 Installed for both and boy was that a deal !!

So far, so good 300 miles

I was able to ride these on a warm day today. They stick good, plenty good for public roads on my 1100G.

Sounds like somebodies scared of getting their precious tires wet! haha.

It's just water.......

Whenever I get a new set of tires, I head for dirt and grass for my test.

hey bill, i was down in your neck of the woods today, had a hamburger after dropping off the 750 to her new home....

your quote just under your post- the two together- was priceless. "I had a hamburger, I dont have to eat a turd to know it tastes like crap" lol

aaaaaaaaanyways- I was also looking at the 712's, as they were cheaper, but went with the 230's, as they also had great reviews and were the more "performance" tire, for only about $20 more.
Haven't mounted them yet, but they are at the garage waiting for me

As good a reason for a ride as any other?

Hey Greg, cool!
I suppose you ate at Redamak's? Hope it was good, but we got some better places to eat. My favorites are Brewster's and the Roadhouse.
So are you still riding a GS or a Suzuki?

Having just done a track day on my GS1100G, (all stock) I can say with out a doubt,

I looked and liked the fact I can pick up a set of those for 20 dollars less than the 230s from Motorcycle Superstore. How responsive was their shipping?

Can't say how shipping is on those particular tires but they have been great on shipping on other tires and gear. Never more than 4 days to south central WI. Prices and shipping have been more than fair. :)

Glad to hear your report Bill, I too bought a set of 712's but even though they are mounted, the bike is still in the build phase. :o I went with them not just because of the price, but for all the positive reviews. Also the fact that I read Shrinko tires are made from the old Yokohama molds. Figured as long as they use a decent compound, the tread design should be top notch. For the record, I bought Bridgestone S-11 Spitfires for the GL1100 and after 1000 miles am pleasently surprised with them as well.

I bought both sets mentioned above from MC-S. Placed the orders online and two days later they were in my shop... AWESOME SERVICE!
