    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Shim question

Newbie question again. I just received my shim kit from Z1 and i have noticed that the numbers on the shims dont match the sizes on the kit. Example: 2.75 shim has 2-50 on it.2.95 shim has 2-80. is this the way they all are or isa there something that i am missing..

Get out your calipers, I'll bet you that 2-50 shim is actually a 2.50 mm shim.

They are probably in the wrong spaces. :o

Did you bother to measure your current shims before ordering a kit?

Unless you plan on opening a shop and will need them all, you probably just wasted a bunch of money.

thanks Steve. That is what I thought too. Just figured I ask to make sure that they didnt have some secret numbering system that i needed a special decoder ring for...

Guys, you need to open up the top of the engine, check your clearances, pull your shims (one at a time, please), THEN determine what shims you need to buy.

You might get by with moving a couple of shims around, and buying only two or three shims, for minimal expense.

This is the time where I will humbly point you to my sig, especially the last part. :o

Not to mention that getting the shims from the shim club is a lot less expensive than buying them from any vendor. I'm surprised that more people don't push that little service one of our friendly GSR members provides to others without much vocal gratitude.
 
They are both open. I am just not a very patient person and have 2 bike to do so i figured I would just buy the kit and go from there. I prefer to have things like this on hand. It may cost me more in the long run but I have what I need on hand and that is the way I perfer it. My biggest issue is having the time. So when I have the time I want everything there to get it done. Steve i have you file already thanks. Now i am ready to go..Just noticed something on the numbering system with these. The smallest shim that is suppose to be in the kit is a 2.65mm but I have 2-30,2-40,2-50,2-55 and2-60 so there goes that numbering system. Looks like the caliper will have to come out when I get home.

you will need Steve's valve adjustment spreadsheet to keep track of the shim sizes.
You might think you can remember the sizes of 8 shims, but you will forget these if
not logged properly...

as usual, don't ask how I know this...

The valve shim kit sold by Z1...

...has 2 each of sizes 2.30mm through 3.00mm. Since most of my shims are already 2.65mm or smaller, about half of this kit is useless to me. I buy them individually ahead of time as I need them. Use Mr. Steve's handy-dandy spreadsheet and you can "guesstimate" the shims you'll need for your next valve clearance check.
