My 79 GS1000L...

The Vetter will be going on soon, probably forever.
The bike is getting to be less of a "10 footer"... I scrubbed the %$#@# out of the wheels yesterday. But the chrome is still pretty "humble"... and I can't afford new stuff. Actually, I can't afford anything... but that's another story. The rear fender is a little more "OK".
Other years/models had painted fenders....
Any one else done this ? Got pics?
Any thoughts are welcome.
Edit: I swear, the bike does NOT look that good "in person" !

Chrome should only be painted if its beyond repair.
Chrome is pretty
Chrome is the Greek word for colour
Colour is the latin word for Colour.

i would leave it, yes, chrome doesn't get you home, but, it gives it a more classic look ;)

I Painted the Fenders on my 750L and regretted it... They look good! Keep it!

I painted mine and I love the look. Have gotten a lot of compliments on it.

Flat black.. The less than desirable chrome on these old bikes looks terrible.
Even when it looks it's best it still looks like crap when compared to updated chrome parts.

Somewhere a restorer is screaming......
It is your bike so do what you want but the chrome is correct for the era the bike was made.

I personally think that Chrome is far nicer than paint on this type of bike.

LOL! you have chrome and want to paint it and I had a painted fender (rear) and wanted chrome.
So do it how ever you like. It's your bike and only your opinion of it matters.
BTW, I did put a chrome rear fender on mine and I love it.

You know, the way your bike is setup without the Windjammer on it, is the way I'd like my bike setup. Chrome fenders and all.
That's the look I'm going for. With a few slight modifications.

I dont like the look of the chrome fenders but yours is in very nice condition. Why not find a beat up fender (thats still straight) and paint it? Then you arent destroying a perfectly clean chrome one and if you dont like it painted you can switch it back?

mine are beat to hell so they will be painted.

painting front fender ??????

painting front fender ??????

hi guys ,,, as you already know i have a 1980 gs1000e ,,, it did come with a crappy front fender so i fixed it ,,then i sprayed it with my spray gun when i sprayed the rest of the bike in commodore vy hot red and i made a mistake ,,i should have sprayed thwe fender and the rest of the bike in 2 pac... it would have been well worth the disapointment later regards oldgrumpy :(

You can visualize the look by trying my paint color previewer, the application will show how it wll look with paint.. Not the same bike..
Personally I always like matching fenders and bike paint., however on yours I like the chrome! If you spend time to polish and keep the chrome shining, then keep them!

AGAIN, let me say the front fender has a "hint if chrome". Not much to look at in person. but , damn, the picture came out nice, didn't it ?
"trying my paint color previewer"
On the 4th read-through, I fiddered out what you meant.
That's really neat. Thanks !
But can you add a "chrome tail" option ? My bike doesn't have a rear cowl.
