So, after months of searching and prowling the internet and asking on here to find a pod set-up for these old funky siamese carbs i have Finally designed a way to make my own Pods. If anyone needs a set of these i can assemble them and ship them for $60-$70 (yes pricey i know but they are decent looking pods, the parts cost me $42)

I have a 83 gs550esd. Now im going to install the pods and put 110 / 107.5 jets in... and leave the pilot jets the same.. What do you guys think on that?

Heres some pics of what my set-up looks like... I will post more on the bike once i get this done... if the sun stays up..

Hi,

Is that a replaceable paper filter or a reusable/cleanable/oiled filter? Either way, if you get your bike running well, you could be in business. They look good. The general wisdom is to start by going up 3 or 4 sizes on the mains and use plug chops to read your plugs.

Thank you for your indulgence,

They are a replaceable filter element. Im sure i can find oiled ones if needed. But im sure these will work fine...

Now i've run into a problem.. how the %$^ do i get my old airbox out.. geezous christ... I can't get it to came apart.. and it won't just slide out.

my origonal jets were 102.5 and 95.

There is a (thankfully) short list of GS bikes that you need to remove the engine to remove the airbox, if you wish to remove the airbox in one piece.

Not sure if your bike is on that short list. :o

.

Ok, air box is out, carbs have been re jetted with the 110 / 107.5 pods installed... 2 1/2 turns out on screws... Fired right up.. Now one question...

My origional carb for my bike had 2 breather lines.. i bought a carb of fa 86 gs550 and it has the 2 breather lines and four other lines that all connect in a plastic piece at the top...

Now since i removed the old airbox, i have the line that comes from the top of the motor (is it a rebreather? It blows air) Should i connect that to the lil plastic goody that the other lines of the carbs come into? Or should i jsut let it hang?

Sigh, took it for a test ride aroudn the block (she's not registered) and she bogs midrange.. From like 3600-5200 rpms jsut gently rolling on the throttle bogs it at thsoe rpms, But above that range it takes off fairly quick. Didn't have time to check plugs tonight but can anyone deduce what this is from? Fuel screws are about 31/2 - 4 turns out for highest idle...

In neutral it runs up just fine with no bogging / hesitation with full throttle from idle, goes from 1100 rpms with a quick full throttle and back off it revs up to 7200. So it seems like it would do good, But when i get on it it kinda bogs with a full throttle around thsoe same rpms then it takes off...

Maybe im sucking too much air? Because it gets real loud at those rpms.

So after fiddling some more... The tube that went from the top of the motor to the airbox had steam coming out of it and had gas in it... What is this tube and would that mean im running too rich?

So, i was running OVERLY way rich... Fixed that.. Bike runs like a dream now with the pods. Feels like my top end is much better. They look beautiful and sound mean...

If anyone wants a pair send me a message.

Hi,

It sounds like you've got it running pretty good. Nice work.

Now since i removed the old airbox, i have the line that comes from the top of the motor (is it a rebreather? It blows air) Should i connect that to the lil plastic goody that the other lines of the carbs come into? Or should i jsut let it hang?

The two smaller lines are vent hoses. Many riders will remove the vent hoses and point the vent nipples themselves down toward the crankcase so there's less chance of anything getting in there.

As for the breather hose, you can just use another little pod filter on it like this:

MpKV2FwE4Hlnk9abJfFOXVvLWmR4O1UZusczD4y2j6JncItOQENsHB1t6icKc0oNBO8m3XlI7mbYXEBnnf-ndSjfxPZtzX4kWiYyPFlg5sD1ebhQqC4Letbwfo8M7N14uAoOmEbYG2Mk31tFs290lnJuqlnpC4z-ERpaLnaZRBbL_5pwMERej7NzpL8R6WGVg4SZ6v2r0reRG313IfwYKes

Dennis Kirk, JC Whitney and other aftermarket vendors carry them. Attach it up under the frame so that it's higher than the top of the motor and the oil vapors will run back down into the engine, hopefully. Or fashion a catch can for any oil vapors that might condense from the crankcase.

Thank you for your indulgence,
