Forum Mentor
Dose anybody know if 82 850 gl had a side stand switch got 1 from a breakers and have it mounted to stand just need to know what colour the wires in the loom are have Haynes manual but not sure what model mine comes under.Cheers

Cheers found the wires connected them to stand switch and bike starts when in gear.I bridged the green/white with the black/white from loom and bike still starts when in gear.Think the bulb for stand warning is missing could this cause the problem??.Any other ideas much appreciated. Conan

The kickstand switch NEVER was tied to starting the bike. It's only purpose is to light the oil pressure light as a warning when the engine is running and the kickstand is still down. If your oil pressure light doesn't light up with the engine off or the kickstand down, then you need to fix that. The only engine start inhibitor is the switch located at the clutch lever and tied in in the headlight bucket.

The bike will start in any gear, if you push the starter button.

The side stand switch ONLY turns on the light, it does NOT prevent starting the bike in gear.

That is one reason that Suzuki had you pull the clutch handle to enable the electric starter.
That way, it did not matter if you were in neutral or in gear.

Also note that there were a couple different styles of side stand switches.
Make sure yours is mounted correctly and is actuated by movement of the side stand.
Might need to use a meter on the leads to verify continuity when the stand is deployed.

If everything is working right, the oil pressure light will stay on when the kickstand is down. Even if the engine is running.

I'll dig around tomorrow had multi meter on continuity test and pressed in button on the switch and made no difference mabey I got a dodgy switch from breakers.

When I was shopping for a switch for my wife's bike, I found one that had continuity when pushed IN and another had continuity when it was OUT.

I don't remember which one was proper, so check your wiring. Find the two wires near the bottom of the battery box that go to the switch.
With the key ON, touch those wires together to see if the light comes ON.
Next, look at the mounting location and the side stand to see if the switch is IN or OUT when the stand is down.
Test the switch in that position to see if you have continuity.

When stand is down switch is out and no beep from multi meter when stand is up exactly the same meeter readung 1,thinking it could be faulty switch, oil pressure light comes on when ignition turned on but goes out when bike is started. If I connect the 2 wires together under the battery g/w & b/w what should happen just to make sure fault isn't in loom.

When the key is ON and those two wires are connected, the Side Stand light should be ON.

Super that is the bulb that is missing I'll replace it tomorrow. So when stand is down that light should be on if switch is working properly.

Steve. There is no separate side stand light on an 82 GS850GL. The light that comes on is the oil pressure light. It serves dual purpose as both a low oil pressure and kickstand down switch. The light will always be on when the engine is not running. It will only go out if the side stand is up and the oil pressure switch opens. A diode separates the two switches. At least that's the way my 82 GS850GL is.

I'm missing the bulb that lights up the bottom red square in the left clock as you are sitting on the bike I'll replace it tomorrow and let ye know how I get on.

That same bulb is missing on mine and I'm pretty sure that it was never there since I have no socket there either. The oil light does come on though with the engine running and the side stand down. I suppose it's possible that the gauge cluster was changed at one time but who knows.

Does your oil light come on with the engine running and those two wires (G/W and B/W) touched together?

Can you post a pic of your gauge cluster? Mine has no markings for side stand indicator. Just a blank spot.

Just rechecked mine and I think I'm loosing my mind. Yes, the speed-o does have a kick stand warning light. Mine does not light either but that's because the bulb is missing as well. The low oil pressure indicator does serve dual purpose though. It will light with the engine running and the kickstand down. The light will go out if I raise the kick stand. Sorry Steve.

I was gettting ready for a vigorous disagreement with you and post this picture, then I saw a few posts after this.

Yes, we already have pictorial evidence of that.

I can't test that right now, as her bike is not ready to run yet, but I was thinking it's the other way around. When the stand is down, the stand light is ON. When the engine dies and the oil light comes ON, the stand light comes ON, too. Can't decide which situation is more dangerous, but Suzuki wanted both lights to come on in one situation or the other, just to make SURE it is seen, even if one of the bulbs was not working. It would also make a difference if the diode was removed at one time and re-installed backward. :-k

Sorry Steve.
No problem. We all learn something just about every day on this forum. :encouragement:

Mine are exactly same clocks replaced the bulb didn't bridge the wires and light came on bridge the wires and light gets a bit stronger am lost now.Wires at side of battery are G/W & B/W.Wires at bulb are orange & B/W which I think is strange.Mabey time to take clocks off and see if some eejit before me put them in the wrong place.
