A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Signal switch issue

On my '83 GS850 there is an issue with the signal/headlight switch. I was told from the guy I bought the bike from that there is a spring missing from within the mechanism that returns the switch back up to the proper location (after toggling down from high beam I assume).

The issue this causes is that the switch more often than not is out of position and when I go to signal left or right, the signals themselves won't activate. If I can manage to put it back in proper position then everything will work fine, but it's pretty hard to do that and focus on riding safely.

I have two questions. First, do you guys think a bike should pass safety with this issue? And second, has anyone had an issue like this before and how did you solve it?

Thanks guys.

I think if they see a right turn signal flashing when need to and then see a left turnsignal flashing when need to, then that passes. I dont think anybody will be looking to see how you have to fuss with the button. Now if the internals of the button fall apart and the signals dont work, well then you have a problem.

Also, when looking into the t/signal swtich keep in mind that it has 5 positions:
Left start, left continue, center nothing, right continue, right start.
(I just made up those names, but you get the idea.)
Is spring return from left start to left contiunue. And is spring retrun from right start to right continue.
And... when it self-cancels (based on signal from speedo and a timer) the switch stays where it was, it doesnt pop to center.

And the control switches are electraically all about the same in 80 and after. But 82 and after had the choke mechanism on the bottom. So if you are looking for a replacement one you will want an 82 or after.
(and I can say that Duanage is a good guy to work with.)
