    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Simple question? GS650 Choke spring too strong?

I have an 82 gs650ez that I just pulled out of storage, and while not a huge deal, I'm just wondering if this is normal operation.

When I push the choke lever to full open and let go of the lever, it'll slowly slide towards half-choke and stay there. Is it supposed to go to half-choke on it's own? I've checked the spring placement against the manual and it is correct. I'd rather not have to hold the choke on full while waiting it for warm up enough for half-choke.
I'm thinking I may need to cut the spring a bit but I don't want it to fail to fully close when I put the lever to the closed position.
 
Long as it lifts far enough to extract the pin from the hole in the carb body is all that matters. Once the hole is open its open and you cant force anything more through it. You wont need to hold it full choke for very long so I don't think its a great trouble. Don't cut the choke springs.

It's not the spring, it's the choke lever mechanism. I had a 1981 GS650GL with the plunger-style choke operation. It relied on friction to resist the spring on the carbs. I had to replace it because I ran out of adjustment and the choke would slowly close, similar to yours; the new assembly worked just fine. I'm not sure if you can adjust the lever assembly or not but I'd start there.

Agree. Maybe look to add a spring washer of some sort to keep the lever from springing back?
 
Interesting. I figured that since the spring compresses when choke is opened, it was trying to close it. Didn't expect to need friction on the lever to resist the spring. I wonder if I could just screw the lever down tighter.... will have to look.
 
The '82 uses a lever on the left handgrip. Just tighten the Phillip screw at the pivot. :encouragement:
