    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

So I haven't posted here much though I've lurked for quite a while now. I wasn't sure where to post this. I was riding the other day (1982 Gs 650 GL) and somthing hit my right boot. I looked down to find something flying by. It looked to be a bolt with some kind of pin or small rod. It came from off the top of where the clutch wire runs into the gut of the engine. I didn't seem unsafe at the time but I've since become a bit paranoid. I don't wanna be on the highway unable to shift or having more pieces fall off :).

Does anyone know what I'm talking about and if that piece is critical or even necessary? Should I replace it before I take it out again?
 
I assume you've already inspected everything from the left handle switch back and found nothing? All bolts, screws, and nuts are still in place? Maybe take a picture of the area you feel where it came from so we can look at it.

Yeah, this makes sense. There is no part like that towards front of bike. except front axle and, as Basscliff said you would have discover that real quick. BUT, check cam chain tensioner in case someone has been creative.
 
Welcome to the GSR.:)

I had a cam cover end cap land on my foot. It may have been one of the short bolts that hold the end cap in place. They are hidden from sight and can loosen over time. Check to see if you can wiggle the end caps. Unfortunately, to replace bolt, the valve cover will need to come off. While there, check your valve clearance.

After rereading your post, is it the bolt that secures the clutch cable to the actuating rod on the top of the clutch cover?

Try to get pictures from a lower view and straight on not down. That will help us figure out more. With that said, I'm starting to think something like a rock, bug, etc. Include pictures of the front of the engine if possible
 
Its possible I ran over something. I saw enough to know it was a metal piece and I didn't notice anything else strange taking it home. I just wanted to double check for safety. I figured more experienced minds would help. I took the picture where I suspected the piece came from. Otherwise everything looks as it was. Ill keep looking and get a more straight on shot for you.

Here is a picture of the bike. Not as flashy as the pictures on here because the previous owner didn't take the greatest care but its mine and I love it. I just wanna make sure its safe.
 
Your cam cover is missing in that picture.

Also looks like you might have a crack in the No. 4 intake boot.
 
It looks like you also need to replace the half moon on the same area with the missing cam cover. Are you sure you also don't have any exhaust leaks (I'm not seeing studs or bolts on some of the headers).
 
Yeah the cap has been gone since I got it and the same with the front. It looks like a mess but amazingly i have never had any leaks from the front. A mechanic friend of mine looked at it and didn't say anything. At least in the front the pipes wont budge at all. The bolt heads came off but they are still in there. I don't have the resources to fix that kinda problem unfortunately. Not now at least. I did see directions on how to get them out somewhere on the website. I didn't notice the crack so I'll try and get to that.

You might want to have a bit of a look at your front end as well . I've had a calliper mounting bolt come loose(:o my fault) .

That is just a round plastic cap.
I could not keep them on my 650G either.
And they are behind the riders foot, and not at all like what he described he saw.

I am suspecting that what was seen was some random thing that was laying in the road.
If it was just about anything from you bike, and would notice that something wasnt working any more.

If your talking about that straight hairline mark on the carb boot, I believe that's just a molding mark from the factory, not an actual crack.
I have the exact same thing in my 650 boots as well, and they definitely are not cracked in any way.
