    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

[-o< :shock: I bought my '81 GS1100EX from a friend about a year ago. He's a handy guy and put the bike together from two "junk" bikes. Myself, being a motorcycle n00b didn't notice much of the mechanical oddities until recently when I started doing all the maintenance on the bike. My learning curve, or his patience, has expired so now I'm armed with a manual, a parts microfiche and some good ol' fashioned stubborn pride.

My current confusion is the two hoses off the carburator. I understand that they went to the air box, that is no longer on the bike.

My question is can I take the hoses off? Do I need to plug them if I don't take them off? If I do take them off whats the best way to plug the ports... if they're supposed to be plugged?! ANNNNNNNNND... if I'm supposed to leave them on... is there a way to stow them out of the way so they're not flapping in the wind like a puppys ears?

And, if they were supposed to be plugged all along would if have any bearing on my failing emmissions?:oops:
 
They are vent lines that should not be plugged. They usually run over the airbox and towards the ground. If the airbox is removed and you are running pods which means a jet kit has been installed you really don't need them at all, but keep the ports open on the carbs. You have to smog test your bike?

Thank you for your reply. I can only assume (and hope) the jet kit has been installed. And just for clarification... I can take the hoses off and leave the ports open then?

As for emissions... I have to get the bike to pass emissions so that I can apply for a "historic" plate so that I don't have to pass emissions any more.:shock: AZ will give historic plates for vehicles over 25 years. I've tried to get the bike thru twice now and it failed worse the second time than the first. Unfortunately it's my primary transportation so it's very important to me that it finally pass when I'm done putting things back together. Hopefully by the end of monsoon season I'll be up and running again!!
 
Your monsoon leaked into the my side of the mountains last week. We had 114 degrees with 50 percent humidity. That's a little much from a relocated Ohio boy. Leave the lines off, they are for venting your carbs. Don't know if anyone can help you unless we know if your not passing because of fuel or oil issues. It might not pass at all with the aftermarket pods. You might have to go with the stock airbox and jetting to pass.
 
Back when I had normally aspirated autos, I always dropped a couple of cans of dry gas into my tank before going to emissions testing. I never failed, but that is all I can tell about the efficacy of the trick. Can't hurt, tho.
