There's no substitute for actual measurement and experience. While in Chicago, we were looking at a sprocket that had some minor wear. I could barely see anything at all, but a couple of guys commented that it was enough that they'd consider changing.
Take a look at this sprocket. I know this is old and needs changing, but for the life of me I can't see how I'd identify it if I couldn't personally vouch for 2300 miles of riding on it before I even got a hold of it.
