A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Starting problem

Hi Guys,
I have a 82 gs850g. I've been on here before. I wired the bike as a caf? racer. All is well except after I've been riding awhile and turn off the bike, when I try to start it again within a few minutes the bike barely turns over.
I checked the starter, bench tested, works great, I checked the ground from the battery and it's fine. I tried to jump the bike from the battery to the solenoid post going to the starter and it's sluggish. Then I hit the start button and it starts right up. My battery is reading 13.7 at an idle, when I rev it up I get 14.77. I have a new rec/reg, new stator, rotor, all systems seem to be working as they should. I'm stumped. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Bench testing the starter only proves that it is not complelty shot. Bench testing it has no load on it, and it is not hot.

Starter turning slower when hot is general indication of starter being marginal.
Pull the starter, take off the end to inspect the brushes and the commutator bars. Prpbably fing the brushes worn way down. Like this:

Can get a rebuild kit at Stocker Starters.
Will need either a Denso (2 brush) or a Mitusha (4 brush) brush kit. Maybe you recall seeing either of those names on your starter when you had it out.

Charging system sounds good from what you said.

Ok, Thanks, I'll check out the brushes. I rebuilt this starter about a year ago and have had no problems. I'll post the results. Thanks again...

I checked out the brushes in my starter. They were dust. Thank you for your help. I will remember this for the future.
