    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I am brandspankingnew to motorcycles.

I just bought a Suzuki GS700 1985 from someone. This bike had been sitting for awhile out of service and after replacing the battery and air filters I had a lot trouble getting it to start. It just turns over but doesn't catch. The other day after messing around with it I got it to start and rode it around the block a few times. And this morning it was back to the same thing and after messing around it started again and I rode it around on some errands.

I don't know how the engine should sound but to me it sounded beautiful and drove great. Then this afternoon when I went to start it I couldn't get it to start no matter how much I messed with it. On the first try It sounded like it was about to start but just died.

Now I've been reading around on these forums trying to pick up ideas about this. I was thinking of draining the carbs. And I'm not sure about the oil since its been sitting around so long.
My neighbor said it sounded like one of the carbs wasn't getting fuel.

If I pull off the fuel line to the carb with it set to prime fuel runs out freely.

Any tips or ideas welcome.

There is old chunks of gas running around in the bowls of the carbs and just made their way to jets and passages. Take your carbs off and clean them. Blow out all the passages with carb cleaner. The real way is to take them completely apart, dip them, replace all the o-rings and rebuild them but since it was running ok this might fix you up.
 
Ok I've been researching this and it seems like it would be quite an undertaking for someone of my experience.

Would I be better off just trying to get it done in a shop?

Have a shop do it if you don't feel good about doing it yourself. I would drain all the old gas from the float bowls and tank if the bike has been sitting for a while and put some fresh in and see what happens. People with Chef's experience would probably just jump right in there and take the carbs apart and make sure that everthing is clean and clear but if you don't have that confidence just take it to a shop.
 
carfuly remove the float bowls. spray carb cleaner in the under side of the carbs. clean out the bowls realy good reinstall. if it was running good you may get away with flushing them out.

Ok. I've talked with various people about this. Latest theory is that I have a bad coil.

Does anyone know if I will need a specific coil for the year and model or if I'll be able to buy one that just meets certain specs? And about how much do these things usually cost someone.

Remove the plugs from the engine and ground them to a fin and check the spark. Yellow and dull is bad. Remove your tank and check and clean all coil connections.
 
sorry to bump this thread just wanna say I finnaly got my bike fixed. turns out the spark plugs were connected incorrectly and something was clogged.

$40 repair bill:-D
