stator bytes the dust?

My 850 stopped charging the battery yesterday. I'm fairly sure it's the stator since the R/R checks out OK using the diode test.

When doing a running voltage test of the stator leads, I only get around 5-6 volts on all 3 leads. I thought this was a little odd - I was expecting one or maybe two at most to be low.

Could there be some other problem causing all stator leads to have such reduced voltage?

Don't hold me to it, but i think the three stator WINDINGS are crimped? at a common point the other ends are what you see coming out of the case.

Did you have your multimeter switched to AC?

Yes. V AC 1-200 range. I plugged the leads into a wall socket with the same setting and got 120, so I know it's acurate.

You should be reading no less than 75VAC at 5000 rpm.
Have you done the "resistance" test yet?
Check your resistance across the three leads, not running, and they should read around 1 Ohm.
Next, if that passes, check continuity from each lead to ground.
I have a fluke 770 meter that will tone with continuity, but you can also check resistance to ground, which should be infinite.
I am betting you have a short in one phase of the stator.

I had read previously that the voltage should be "around" 75VAC, and my stator was reading 67.5 VAC consistently across all three phases.
The problem was I was only charging at 13.2 VDC max.
I switched out the stator and the first reading was at 80VAC across all three phases.
The charge rate tested properly this time at anywhere from 13.8 to 14.5 VDC.

The reason I replaced my stator is that both the Clymer and Haynes stated that if the tests showed any less than 75VAC then the stator was bad.
This is with a Honda CB450SC Shindengen SH532-12 5.5 R/R attached recently too.

The static stator tests are OK, but it's only putting out 5-10 volts on any lead when running. I've ordered a new stator.

Did the new Stator solve your problem.
I got readings of 3-5.5-5vac with all other tests withing specs.

You are not alone.

I will be ordering a new stator also.
