stator papers / multimeter question

This is a stupid question, but I don't know the answer, so I'll ask.

The stator papers say to check the r/r, use the diode test position of the multimeter and check for voltage across different wires of the r/r. My multimeter seems to be reading in ohms instead of volts. Do I need to go buy a different multimeter or what?

Thanks,
Joel

Bump for this question. I am an electrical moron. I have a nice meter, but can only understand how to use it for continuity.

any decent multimerer usually wont have a diode test position. To test a diode, use the 10X scale and place the red lead on one end and the black lead on the other end of the diode. Then note the reading---reverse thr leads and note reading again.

The needle will move upscale in one position but wil not move ((or move much less) in the other position((im talking about the position of the red and black probes.

R ---]<--- B The almost diagram to the left is similar to what a diode symbol will look like. I always remember the symbol to say that current will not flow in the direction of the arrow.

Another way of looking at it is if the black lead is on the diode wire lead near the B and the red is on the diode wire lead near the R, the meter needle should show movement.

There will not be an R or a B marked on the diode.
Comon guys dont be so lazy and help me with this :D :D

usually a bad diode will give one of two readings

1--the needle will show the same reading no mater where the red and black leads are placed ----This is a shorted diode

2--The needle will not move in either position no mater what scale you are on..This would be an open diode((like a burned fuse))

OH OH DID I SAY THE THING BACKWARDS???????

When I connected my multimeter to the r/r (in the diode position), the + to the red wire, and the - to the yellow wires, I got nothing on the multimeter. When I connected the - to the red, and the + to the yellows I got ~500 on the multimeter. This was as far as I went.

with + to the red output wire and the -- to each of the input yellow wires you want to see OL or nothing on the meter, this shows the diods are good.

Cool. I'll double check everything tonight and report my results. I need to thoroughly check the stator as well.

there are six diodes so you must check the RR six times. From the black wire to each yellow lead and then from the red wire to each yellow lead. Write down all the values. Should be 500-600 ohms in one direction and very high, infinite, in the other.

after you check the diode and get a reading you have to reverse the leads and either get a high reading or 500-600 ohms.

Anything too low or high in both directions should be thrown away. As a final check measure between the black and red leads, should not be shorted or below 500 ohms ( this would indicate a regualtion problem)

Ok. I tested red lead to the red wire and touched the black lead to all three yellows. I got open circuits on these. I then touched the black lead to the red wire and the red lead to the yellows. I got 500 (mV I'm guessing) on all three of these.

I then did the same thing using the black wire from the r/r instead of the red wire. I got open circuits on all six of these tests.

So, I conclude that the r/r is toast. Thanks for all your help.
