So I went through the stator papers on find out that my r/r is blown :(, also found out that my stator wires aren't yellow like everyone has been saying they are. I have a blue/white, green/white, and yellow wires coming from the r/r and stator. I am planning on buying the r/r that electrosports sells, but all of the wires for the stator are yellow. Will it matter which wires i connect to each other? I would think that it does, but I'm no electrician, just a jack of all trades, master of none :p

The stator has three identical legs, and one wire goes to each. It makes no difference which wire you use. That's why new replacement stators have all three wires yellow.

There is on old Japanese motorcycle design engineer and lays in bed at night laughing at us over stuff like this. He's the one that decided to run three different colored wires from the stator.

At one time the stator used two wires directly to the R/R unit. When the headlights were on more power was needed so the third wire routed though the harness past the headlight on/off switch. Later the on/off switch was disabled and eventually eliminated so the lights are on all the time. When they did that the old Japanese design engineer decided to leave the connectors as they were, so on the newer model GSs a wire from the stator runs up into the headlight bucket and comes back to the R/R unit for no apparent reason. I think he gets a big laugh out of that one.

Which brings up the question? Any reason to not bypass this loop and just connect
it directly to the RR?

Hi Mr. AustinJames19,

Your tachometer cable (from another thread) sounds like it is whining. Lube it up, also spray some lube into the tach itself, then connect it securely and straight. I've found that if the cable gets twisted in the mounting that it can make a lot of noise.

If you buy a stator it will have all yellow wires, they're all exactly the same and it doesn't matter which yellow wires you connect to the yellow regulator/rectifier input wires. There are some guides with pictures on my site that you may find useful. Now let me roll out the welcome mat for you...

Here is your official "mega-welcome". Please take notice of the "Top 10 Common Issues", the Carb Rebuild Series, and the Stator Papers.

Thanks for joining us. Keep us informed.

Thank you for your indulgence,

Sadistic Japanese

well that is one twisted sense of humor  That does make more sense now that I think about it. Since in the stator papers, you are supposed to check the resistance between all three wires. Thanks guy, I appreciate it!

Thanks Basscliff, your website has been very useful. I guess I'll work on that speedo cable since I cant ride the bike till I get the r/r

Nope. In fact...doing this has it's own reward. It's revenge on the sadistic Japanese Design Engineer.

As mentioned above, it makes no difference, as long as you have all three stator wires connected to all three r/r wires.

Well, the reason is not really apparent unless you go out of the USA.
Some other countries still had the switch for a couple of years, so the main wiring harness remained the same.
Only the section from the plug under the gas tank to the handlebar switches changed, based on the destination country.

In fact, you are better off if you DO bypass the loop.
By connecting directly to the r/r, you will eliminate three connections that are potential corrosion points, assuring more-consistent charging.
