    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Stethoscope leakdown testing

I had a nice talk with a mechanic today who logically stepped me through a cylinder by cylinder leakdown test.

Nothing measurable but by ear.
It makes sense. If you take all cylinders and pull all plugs except one. If you then rotate the crank so the piston goes through all 4 cycles then you can listen at the exhaust and the intake and at the oil filler hole for the sound of gas escaping.

Damn sharp stuff and a lot more usefull than a old school compression tester.
Cheaper than a leak down tester too. Its FREE!
 
So at what point while the air is escaping past the valves or rings do you judge the engine good or not? very hard to quantify the amount of leakage by that method don't you think?

No but if it is producing a leak from one specific location you can judge bent valves vs. piston ring blowby.

All pretty cool. He told me how to easily take an air-tool chuck and make a poor mans compressor\spark plug.
 
That is all good, and it is a good indicator. But a leakdown tester measures in percentage of leakage, and there are established good and bad numbers. All engines are going to have some piston leakage. The catch is you can precisely tell if there are wear problems inside the engine. Doing it by ear you can only guess.

It's a JUNK YARD TEST! basicly you can hear a major problem not a slight one..


wet/ dry comprression test will tell you valves or piston rings..

a dual gauge leakdown test will give you the best information you can have for the sealing integrity of a internal combustion engine.
