    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Stripping paint from frame

With my Katana some previous owner had decided that the frame should have been black not the original silver

Instead of being classy and getting the whole frame coated or painted, he just painted over the parts you can see, under seat and under tank is the original silver

So in going back to the original color am I deluding myself into thinking I can strip off the black and not harm the silver or should I just say screw it, pull the bike apart and powder coat the correct color

I have to say that the thought of pulling the bike down to the frame is pretty daunting for me, from a time and ability point of view

Best way would be to strip completely and repaint or powder coat.
 
If he used really cheap spray paint it might be possible to remove it without hurting the original paint underneath, which is fairly hard paint and well cured by now. Try WD-40 and some fine steel wool, test it on an area not so visible at first. I have been able to remove overspray that way, that's about the same. Give it a try, depending on how good the original paint is you may get the results you want in about ten minutes.
If not, you won't be any worse off when you go to spend a month and hundreds of dollars repainting the whole thing. Good luck.

I have found over the years that if you want a paint job to look good, remove everything and start over. You never know what is below the finish that you are looking at and what kind of prep work was done, prior to a PO slapping paint on things.

A blast cabinet works great however, I did the last one, with a 4" angle grinder and coarse wire wheel(s) and it turned out great.
