    A Special Note about Email accounts!
    DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Introductions first;

My first post in this forum, REALLY glad to locate this source of entertainment... er information.

I've got a '78 GS550 that I located in a farmers storage bin. I used to ride a '76 750 so the nostalgia convinced me to buy it. At the time of purchase, the 550 was running really rough, but running. It looked like it had potential and I needed something for me to do with the boys, so I started gradually cleaning it up and putting it back together.

I'm at the point where I am trying to kick the engine over but it feels like something is really draggin internally. On testing the spark plugs, cylinder 1 & 4 don't spark. That could account for no spunk, so I immediately thought bad coil. Bought a new one and installed it, still no spark on 1 & 4. Continuity from the points to the coils is good, just wondering what I am overlooking.

This is where you guys come in. I'm not a mechanic although am not scared of learning a few new skills. So what should I be checking now?

Thanks

Did you check the points yet? Check for voltage at the coils? If the coil voltage is less than 10 volts, I suggest you look up the coil relay mod. If the first two things check out, you must have a wiring issue between the points and the coils. It's a pretty short wire run so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Now my inexperience with motors will start to show.
Yes, I checked the points, they look clean, not rounded and are gapped properly. Voltage from the coil lead to ground runs about 9.5v on both coils. Where the heck do I locate the coil relay module? I can't even seem to find it on the wiring diagrams!!! Am I correct in assuming I trace the wire up from the points or am I out to lunch?

It's a good thing my son is only 9 years old. I might have the bike ready when he gets a license........:D
