    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

My '81 GS450EX has a dip stick instead of a sightglass to check oil level. The owners manual does not specify whether or not the dip stick should be screwed into the cover before checking oil level or if it should only be inserted it into the side case without screwing it in like Honda specifies.

Anyone know the proper proceedure for Suzuki? :oops:

Actually, from my official Suzuki 450 Service Manual (1979/81), you are not to screw in the dipstick when checking the level:

* ... supported on the center stand.
...
* Start up the engine and allow it to run for several seconds at idling speed.
* Turn off the engine and wait about 1 minute, then check the level with the filler cap dipstick. Do not screw in the cap when making this check. If the level is below the mark "F", supply oil to that level.

Without reading this, based on other types of engines, I too would have thought to screw it in. And from reading about alternator/stators around here, the proper oil level seems pretty important.

Measure your threads and put another mark on your dipstick the same length up higher and screw it in to check it.

Make sure that you are on a level surface...

You get more accurate readings like that and even if you don't raise your mark you will not do any damage to your motor.

Thanks! It's actually easier to check the oil without screwing in the dip stick; extract dip stick, wipe it off, stick back into crankcase, remove and check.
 
You've got that right. Keep it topped off and your air cooled GS engine will thank you for it.

What ever way you check your oil. Next time you change the oil & filter
make sure to add the correct amount & see what the dipstick reads
