    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Swapping a km/h speedo for a mph one

I want to replace the gauges - specifically the speedo, but I'm considering replacing the whole instrument cluster - on my '82 GS650GL.

The primary reason I want to change them is quite simply the speedo is in km/h only, and for some reason us brits decided to measure speed and distance in miles. :)

I've been eyeing up various replacements on eBay, but I wasn't sure if it was just a case of fitting the existing cable to the new gauge and be done with it, or if there was more work to be done.

I did search, but most posts were about fixing broken speedos or swapping like for like, and I specifically want to know if the km/h to mph will cause me pain.

The MPH gauge will just swap straight over. If you want to change the odometer reading to equal your KM reading in miles I put a thread on here a while back showing how to do it - it's easy.

Or you could avoid changing clocks and just pop on a speedo converter. Converts your KMH clocks to MPH and it just plugs into the speedo cable. Costs ?30 -40.

IIRC the speedo drive units produce the same ratio on cable driven speedometer bikes 2240RPM on the cable = 60MPH so any Japanese cable driven speedometer should work as long as the speedometer drive is original to the wheel that is driving it.

Not all the time - some manufacturers used different drive ratios and cable fittings. Don't forget the electrics won't plug in either. You shouldn't have any trouble finding an original - Ebay is littered with them.
