    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Tank bag paint protection

Has anyone used green painters tape to protect the paint from tank bag scuffing? Is it effective?
 
I've only see people use that clear plastic stuff, like you put on your cell phone screen....
Don't know anyone that used masking tape...

I've heard of guys using duct tape but that seems a little excessive and possibly sketchy.
I need the tank bag for quick access and to hold my gps. I would like to order a bags connect one from Twisted Throttle but they're a little pricey. After I see the Daytona all taped up I think I'll cave pretty quickly. :)
 
I've used painters tape to protect paint under my saddle bags, but not a tank bag.

One thing I did find out was when the manufacturer says "magnets can affect metallic paint over extended periods", they aren't kidding. For me, that extended period was only a couple days.
 
I have never had a problem with my tank bag scratching the paint. I think the brand is Rocket. It's very soft under the magnets and I don't think I could ever fit enough weight in there to make it shift. I just periodically sponge the tank down to keep it clean under there.
I would be nervous about the masking tape becoming a permanent part of the tank. I have seen it stick to a house too well when left on for too long. But I guess if it's under your tank bag it wont be seeing any direct sunlight or getting really hot so you might be okay.

My tank is plastic so it has a base that attaches to tank with webbing. I can see scuffs in the clear coat from the PO. I haven't had the opportunity (actually I haven't chosen a product line) to polish it all out. I gave the tank a quick wax today so hopefully the tape won't bond too well. I too have had some crappy experiences with tape residue and removal refusal.

I'll be using it around the saddle bag straps. I bought some zenrails to keep the bags off the plastics.
That's depressing about the magnetic bag and the metallic paint. None of my bags ever came with a warning. What did the magnets actually do?

It disrupts the metallic particles in the paint. Instead of them being even throughout causing the metallic finish, they begin to get grouped together under the magnets. Its tough to see unless you look at it, and looks like somebody touched the paint while it was curing.
 
swing into a decal/vinyl place like a sign shop and have them make a clear vinyl decal in the right shape to cover the area. should be cheap, and it will not effect your paint if you take it off later. Have them install the decal,... Trust me on this.. ..

I put a small towel between the bag and the tank. And magnet works just as well. Also be sure that the bag is clean at the bottom each time you put it on your tank take a second and wipe any debris away.
 
I use clear contact paper, the stuff used to line drawers. It is very durable, cheap ($7 will buy a lifetime supply), and usually peels right off without any residue. I have had a bit of residue left around the edges, particularly in hotter temps but overall this is the best solution I have found.

Well the maskin tape worked great. Now if the CO could have held on to the seat while locking up his helmet at Cape Flattery the bike would still be scratch less. Ug. Butter fingers.
 
I use the foam mesh used for RV cabinets and plates. It works well. I have also used Polyethelene tape. It works well, but costs more.
 
Duct tape, but before sticking it on the tank, stick it to a sweatshirt, or a carpet or something, peel it off and stick on again, a few times until the glue is mostly stuck to lint. That way it doesn't mess up the paint when you go to pull it off.
 
I use Frisket....Used by air brush aitsts to mask stuff...Its clear and peals off EZ
 
I just use that rubberized not slip mat stuff you line your tool box or cupboards or whatever with. Doesn't stick to anything, no residue etc and you don't have to peel it off.
