    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Tank Rust?

Every once in awhile (especially after sitting for awhile) the performance of my GS700E goes to heck. At worst it runs only with the choke on and stalls as soon as I roll on the throttle.

If i drain the outside float bowls i get this ugly stuff.

Looks more like dirt than rust to me but i'm no expert. Unfortunately I can't get to the inside bowls so i have to allow them to blow through what ever crap they have before my engine begins to run smoothly again.

The bike is in pretty good shape do you think the inside of my take could be that badly corroded?

Will an in-line fuel filter solve all of my problems?

I would pull the tank and carbs. Thats some nasty stuff your running through your engine. Your tank looks to have rust in it. Need to get it out of there.

Seal the tank (kreem or por15) and clean the carbs. I would also use an inline filter as well.

I am having the same problem, runs on choke only, gas her and she goes to sleep.
I sprayed in some carb cleaner (she ran faster, not bogged down... weird, so I sprayed around carb boots with the carb cleaner, FOUND,
engine died as I sprayed #4 intake boot at the engine side. I guess I need some O-rings.

Help needed here too.

My 83 ORIGINAL boots have phillips screws, locked tight, any ideas to extract them?, with carbs out, still no room for impact wrench. I can get vice grips on outer screw, but what about the inner??

Stimpy, some of the impact wrenches have a removable head that holds the bit and is the same size as a 3/8 in ratchet. If you have access to one of these it works perfect. Or if you don't have one like this you can use a socket the same size as the bit and use a ratchet to break them loose.
 
Billet, I would definately pull the tank and carbs. Clean the carbs and if you are short of money a quick fix is to use white vinager 50/50 with water fill the tank and let it set for about 24 hrs then drain dry thourly with either a hair dryer or compressed air (if you have a compressor). The only problem with this is that if the tank is not kept full it will start to rust again. One of the best fixes I've found is the Por-15 kit you can order it directly from Por-15 here http://www.por15.com/product.asp?productid=306
 
I too have a 1985 GS 700E. I had the exact same problem with my tank...except by the time I realized the problem the tank had rusted through from the inside out. I suggest you not let the tank go. I had a heck of a time finding a good used tank (more than a year). I have a good one now I got off ebay and had it painted. But before I did that I cleaned it well and sealed it with Por-15. The stuff is great!!! I also looked into gas tank renu at http://www.gas-tank.com/bike.htm This place will fix your tank no matter how bad it is....but it is pricey. While the tank is off and you are sealing it, make sure you take the carbs off and clean 'em out. They are going to be loaded with junk. I too put an in-line filter on after I did all of my work. I don't need any more crap in my carbs!

Just a hint about the Por-15....make sure the tank is good and dry and good and warm before you perform the final step. It will come out much better if it is dry and warm. Good Luck!
 
Thanks Guys... I've got 3 old bikes i expected I'd have to do this to but this is the newest and i was hopping to get away without doing any major maintenance this summer...

Oh well cant always get what you want...
