A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I am shopping around for a second tank for my 1978 GS750.

Obviously, another GS750 tank will work, but there are not a lot of these out there. I plan to strip and reshape the tank, so exterior dings and surface rust don't bother me too much. Nevertheless, the 750 tanks I have seen are either a bit pricey, or show heavy rust inside.

So, I am wondering what other options are available.

From some photos, I see that other GS tanks share the same front connection but have different bolt holes at the back. Some have two bolt holes instead of the single one on my bike. Others have a single bolt hole that is parallel to the ground, instead of the 90-degree mount on my bike.

Of course, the underside of the tank would have to fit the frame, but does anyone know how far "off the reservation" I might go to fit a tank to this bike? For instance, a single parallel bolt connection could easily bend to the correct position for me. OTOH, I cannot move bolt holes on the frame.

Similarly, how do people fit aftermarket tanks to these bikes? Do you weld a bracket to fit the frame connections? Or is that just part of the customization process? As much as people want for those tanks, they should come with robots to fit the tank, balance your checkbook, shine your shoes, etc. :D Not really looking to drop $400-500 on one of them, but the fitment mechanics intrigue me.

1981 GS750E tank has the 90* mounting tab like yours. Don't know what the differences in the 78 and 81 are but this may help some. I love the style of the tank.
