Yeah Isleo's bike is truly a modern day work of art. His was and still is the inspiration behind my build. Im just trying now not to copy it to much, I may have the engine done black with chrome hardware to change things up, or have the the swinger powder coated black with some SS brake lines , not totally sure yet.... anyway keep me posted on your build, I am still knee deep in mine, so any questions let me know, I will probably be experiencing the same behind the ear scratchin issues..:-k

Ones I've seen appeared to be made from Nylon.

Dan :)

IIRC, Nylon has good abrasion resistance, and molds pretty well. UHMW probably has better abrasion resistance, but I don't think I've ever seen it molded. So, it might not get used in a production setting.

You could look at the plastic stock catalog page at McMaster.com. That should have enough description to make a reasonable selection. It might not be worth the bother, though. A good hard Nylon or glass-filled Nylatron would be a safe bet. I don't think chain lube would attack it either.

520 is plenty strong for a GS. All the AMA Superbike 1000cc 190 RWHP and 240 HP MotoGP monsters that guys like Rossi, Stoner, Spies and Mladin ride are equipped with 520 chains. Not all 520 chains are created equal though, some are thicker and thinner than others and some will last longer than others. For my project I tried a EK 520 chain and a DID 520 chain and the DID ERV3 is thinner by several mm than other 520 chains and has held up well on my GS1000 and my GSXR racebike - a bit pricey but a very nice chain. :)

Good to know! Several MMs means extra clearance....thanks for the info man!

Killer help here. I just cant wait to get all my parts together so i can start dry assembly. Wont be till Jan tho, so be patient guys!

You got it, the clearance difference between the EK and the DID was that the EK would rub the frame and the DID wouldn't as it was thinner. Rossi uses the DID ERV3 if that gives any indication to its strength.

Did erv3

Yep...went with DID ERV3 for these exact reasons thinnest one out there....every MM counts on rear fat tire conversion.

Probably a dumb question, but im assuming that Katmans pivot collars make it possible to use the stock GS pivot but use the stock Bandit bearings. Do you need to change the head bearings for the new triple or does it use the stock GS bearings there??

My Gixer front end came with head bearings which I am going to use. I believe Isleo replaced his with new, dont have mine apart yet but I assume it being a bolt up they should be the same.

Are you goingwith 530 or 520 in the rear? If you go with 530 let me know I have a (brand new) Vortex spocket and 530 chain (chain has about 10,000 miles on it) I'll let it go as a package deal. The pic below shows it mounted to the GS hub on the Bandit rear, it will fit either GS/Bandit same bolt pattern

I am in the midst of this same conversion on my 83 ED. I have a 94 GSXR front end and rear wheel. I also have an RK X-Ring (530XSOZ1) with only 2500 miles on it that I would like to use. As far as I can tell there is only a 1/2mm difference between the pin length (I assume that's the widest part of the chain) of the two chains with the RK being a little wider at 19.05mm vs 18.6mm. Do you all think I should still switch over to the DID 520? You know after I type all this out, I guess I might as well try it out and see, eh? :) I'll be starting my own thread soon. I just got my .95kg racetech fork springs and head bearings installed so the front end ought to be together by next week!

Can you use a 530 sprocket with a 520 chain?? or vice verse? Seems like you SHOULDNT do that to me?? But again, im a newb as far as modern stuff goes. I was PLANNING on using Robs Supersprox all the way around in 520 AFAIK...

You have to go with 520 or 530...you cant mix the two, different sizes.
Can't go wrong with the Supersprox

Not a good idea, use matching chain and sprocket sizes. The 530 chain will fit on a 520 sprocket, but it'll fit loosely and cause excessive wear to the chain and sprocket. A 520 chain won't fit at all on a 530 sprocket due to their width difference.

K, I was pretty sure they couldnt be mixed, but didnt know if the 520, which is totally new to me, had been designed to work with one or the other...thanks for the clarification.

I plan 520 all the way to eliminate the clearance problems...

I went to a 520 srocket myself on a 83 gs750.I have gsxr swing arm and gsxr front end.Katman knows his stuff. He help me with my bike build. He has done this so many times.Trust what he is telling you.I know first hand with the work he does.I have seen bikes he is building and has built. He helped build mine.I am running a 180 on the back and a 120 on the front.I didn`t have to grind my frame at all with the work i had done.My next mod i am doing and i hope with the help of Katman is putting in a 1127 gsxr motor ;).Thanks again Katman for all your knowledge and help.

Oh i know he knows his stuff. He's been super helpfull thus far, and i have complete faith in this project. I have simply been asking some of the other guys questions about stuff that Rob hasnt done or may not have tried yet, like the rear brake MC, and retaining the stock location without issues. Ground clearance was a big concern of mine too, as im not a short nor light guy, so losing alot there would be bad news. I have complete faith that I will be good to go tho, with at most maybe a respring/revalve. If that doesnt seem to give me the ride hight im happy with, i have been working on a way to make a drop top clamp which will give me about .8inches back on the forks as well.

I know you were just asking is all.I just wanted to let everyone on the site know if you need help he is a great guy to go to is all.It is good to ask questions to alot of people i do as well.I am sure you will get all the help you need off the site.

I was just thinking you could go to a Busa Shock. They are pretty stiff so that would help for your size?.

Im not going monoshock. Staying with twin shock, Ohlins...im talking about the front forks, they are an inch shorter than stock GS11 (gixxer1100 are 30.5, the GS1100 is 31.5)

Hello rotty
i know katman knows his stuff but if you need to bounce any ideas around or want to know the pitfalls & solutions to sticking a gix motor in give me a shout as ive done it 6 or 7 times for myself & others :D
