A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

The bane of the diagnostician...the "funny noise"

Over the last 3-4 days, started to hear the dreaded "funny noise" on The Flame! Noise sounds like it's coming from the chain area (kinda behind and below me seated on the bike), but chain and sprockets are new from last season and the chain is properly adjusted. The noise is an irregular metallic rattle (almost a jingle) that is only heard when cruising or decelerating in 3rd gear or higher. No sign of the sound in neutral (regardless of engine speed) and no sign of the sound when accelerating. (Of course, wind/engine noise and a helmeted rider make precise characterizations of the sound at speed difficult.)

Really sounds like something is loose and rattling, but I can find nothing to account for it, including the exhaust (no obvious loose baffle when I kick the exhaust at the collector or the megaphone). Also, sound is unaffected by bumps in the road...

Any ideas?

Check to make sure the chain guard has not been kicked so that the chain is rubbing on it.

Checked chain guard yesterday when I got home from work - looks fine (no dents and all fasteners tight).

I had my license plate do that to me one time. I only had bolts through the top two holes, and the plate was vibrating against the backing plate that holds the inspection sticker. Just something to check. Maybe you have a fastener getting loose on you.

Might also pull the cover and have a look at your countershaft sprocket. You would hate to find out the hard way that the nut was coming loose.

My old chain used to do that. I had installed it on the bike the way it came off of the bike, before I knew any better. The spacer was on the wrong side of the sprocket. It took three years to wear out a 630 DID O-Ring chain, but it used to jingle and make all sorts of noise that I was never aware of until I replaced it correctly.

In the interests of providing closure, I am update this thread. Found the source of the noise on Saturday. It was...um...my helmet. :o

One of the vent sliders was stuck between open and closed. For some reason (probaby related to the way the sound from the slider propogated throught the helmet to my ears) the effect sounded just like something coming from below me on the bike.

The breakthrough in finding it came when I ducked my head down behind my windshield to cut the wind noise and, thus, hear the sound more clearly. Instead, it disappeared completely.

What kills me is that, for the past six weeks, I have been bugged by this noise and it has seriously reduced my riding enjoyment because I was worried something serious might be wrong. Well, at least there is still some time left in the riding season...

So the noise was all in (or on) your head?

:D

I guess if you're not having any real GS issues, you have to invent them. Lucky me. :)

Seriously, though, even though I blamed sound wave propogation through the helmet in this case, the fact is that I have a long history of difficulty in localizing sounds. Don't know why.

Anyway, back to enjoying late-summer riding! :D
