A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

The GSResources 2005 Balance Sheet

As a matter of strategy I decided to go from contibuting in August or September to doing it in January, starting next month. That way, with the exception of this year, I will ALWAYS be listed as the super site supporter I am...

Having said that, as Frank mentioned this forum is covered financially for over five years! If there is ever a financial problem I have no doubt that a simple request from Frank will bring in mucho dinero when needed. Also, if finances should ever become a regular concern I agree that Frank could simply lock out more valuable areas of the forum to "paying members" only ... I have no doubt that many more subscribers would be forthcoming as a result.

One last thing ... I DO think that Frank should take a GSR sanctioned "rally trip" on us, preferably to the 2nd annual GSR convention, and possibly to other rallys as well. We'd all enjoy the opportunity to meet you, Frank!!

Hmmm. I was considerate as to post ALL rally's. Now I see where this is going.
If he truly wants to attend the "BEST" rally, then by all means it should be the North Carolina one.  :P

I know this discussion has been covered before and opinions of where people think the GSR should go are as varied as the motorcycles we all ride. Personally I like it the way it is ....it seems to work. As a person who does computer tech support and some marketing, I see far too many websites that have lost their focus in the pursuit of fortune and fame. I know there are lots of ways to commerialise (is that a real word?) a site without having all the banners and pop-ups, but that is not what usually happens when corporate sponsors want their way with you. I can take a break during the day, come here and not have advertisers in my face wanting my money. It?s great to have a site like the GSR that is truly just for the enthusiasts. The site does not seem to have any financial issues at present so why the need for more money? Bigger is not always better, unless of course it?s a GS. If the site needs more money I?d be more than willing to increase the amount I send each year to keep it basically the way it is. The only thing I would like to see on the site right now would be more of the component specific tech articles. Perhaps step-by-step articles on fixing a rusted gas tank, R/R conversions (I think there?s one in the works), or chassis/frame overhaul. These would have to be contributed by the members as Frank and crew have done more than enough getting the site to where it is now.

Sandy gets where we are coming from. We collect money to run the site, give the editors a small stipend once a year and pay for anything that we feel is appropriate for the site. We aren't in this to make money. Cover the expenses and we are happen and our supportive GS'ers have done just that. We have enough money on the bank no to run this site for 10+ years. There is no need to do things to raise more money.

As for advertising, the company Electrex was kind enough to fund us in our early days in exchange for advertising. We appreciated the support but it always bugged me to see advertising on site, thus the change to a contribution based arrangement. I think it has worked out well for us and I see no point in going back to what we used to do. We have enough advertising everywhere we go in life without seeing it on this site.

I appreciate all the support you are all giving me. Thanks so much. I really hope to make at least a couple of rallys this year. It was tough this year with the new job (no vacation time) and new house (no time). Hopefully things will calm down a bit this year where I can get to some of these. Heck, I may even try riding the bike to one and not trailer it. I'm not worried about the bike - my butt hasn't been on a day long ride in a couple years.

Well, here's my $.02

I agree with the decision to not have advertising or require a fee to access the site. With our existing funding levels we can run this site for a long time, and as someone mentioned, if things do get tight, one word from Frank and I'm confident people would step up and we'd have a surplus again. Also, I don't mind if others benefit from my contribution. That's just a bonus on top of all the value I get from the site, and a way to help other GSers.

I'm thinking about what could we do to make this site better without changing how it is funded, but maybe taking more advantage of our fortunate financial situation. The only thing that comes to mind is finding a way to store pictures in the Technical forum on the site. The threads are never purged, but people's personal Web sites where the pictures are stored (and linked to) change eventually, and then that important part of the explanation (or question) is lost. I realize pictures take up a lot of storage and there might have to be a limit on size or number or something. It may be so expensive that to do it we would have to charge a fee, in which case I'd say forget it, but it may be worth looking into. I'm not suggesting going back to the existing threads, just for new ones. The topics repeat often enough.

Has that ever been investigated? What do you think? :-k Any other ideas about how the site could be improved? Even ones that cost a little, but not too much...

Oh here we go... Dave, I did include ALL rallys, but I wanted to emphasize the convention, which is more than just a rally ... I was just building on what you initially suggested. :P

Now with regard to the "BEST" rally, can we really trust the take of a guy who couldn't even decide without help that protective wear was better than a t-shirt? ... and you think you are qualified to judge the best rally?? 8O

Psssst ... I'll give you a helpful hint -- the BEST rally is whichever one I'm at ... just ask me!! (I AM a legend in my own mind, after all!) 8O 8O 8O
