If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

The works. lol.

Well I may receive some flak for this, but I'm ok with my decisions and stand by them.

So I was browsing SOHC4.net (Honda forum, oh noes!) and looking for any wisdom on cheap gas tank rust removal. My tank was questionable at best, and I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on kreem or por if it was a lost cause.

Someone recommended (and had pictures to prove) "The Works" toilet bowl cleaner. Stuff is $1.23 for 28oz at walmart. So I bought 2 bottles and figured I'd try it out.

Let me clarify. I've worked around some really gnarly chemicals in my various lines of work. This stuff is terrifying. When I say to wear PPE and seal your tank 3 times over... I am serious. I had a minor leak from the petcock opening and the cleaner actually began to dissolve my concrete garage floor.

Now that said... it works incredibly well. I threw a handful of screws in with the 2 bottles, sealed everything up pretty well, and played the tank like a maracca. I only let it sit for 30 minutes and ran it full strength, but it cleaned about 80% of the rust out in short order. I'm going to do it again tonight, but I'm going to use 3 quarts and fill the rest of the tank with water and let it sit overnight. I'll report back tomorrow with pictures and the end results.

I will say that the parts that are cleaner, look brand new. I'm not certain the tank doesn't leak as of right now, but for a total investment of less than $7 in cleaner; can't go wrong.

Hi,

Tank Cleaning: with Evapo-Rust

It's a little more expensive but non-toxic, environmentally safe, and works great.

Thank you for your indulgence,

I've seen this method knocking around the net. Let us know how it comes out.

I'm assuming that it's an acid. Don't forget to wash it out with some kind of neutralizer or it will continue to eat away at the metal.

Oh and don't worry, I've collected all of the waste into an old paint can and will dispose of it properly.

MSDS says that stuff is 15 - 25% HCl. A very strong acid. Some baking soda after your derusting would be a good idea.

Well that explains the concrete melting. Baking soda is what I plan to use after tonight's cycle, but thanks for affirming it. (I was slightly second guessing myself and debating using white vinegar a la fight club)

I was guessing HCL. Best toilet cleaners at work all use HCL. Once got to clean-up when a new guy accidentally speared a pallet of muriatic acid with an electric reach truck. Good concrete cleaner! ;) Takes a bit to clean up though.

I don't suppose it would affect a failed Kreme coating? My original tank is siting idle with Kreme flaking in it.

I suspect the HCl will eat that old lining right off, but not positive. It will eat the rust, and metal for that matter, on the inside of the tank so it may well take the lining off too.

Just know that this kind of acid is super strong and if you have any pin holes in the tank it will open them up further. Please be safe.

CLZ, how did it turn out? I hope that you didn't get any on your person or in your eyes.

Daniel

gotta use mek on that...also..ive had pretty good luck using a product called prep -n- etch...its phosporic acid..(works way better than evaporust) and its only $15 a gallon at lowes/hd. If you use it, you better get something to line that tank quick..as it flash rusts rather quickly

MEK does dissolve the Kreem, but not as fast as paint stripper.

The residual rust isn't going anywhere, I scraped at it with a screwdriver and pressure washed the tank a couple of times. Made sure to dry it out well before I proceeded any further...

So are you going to seal it now? If you don't, the rust will grow. I've used Por-15 a few times and it seems like really good stuff.

WOW!
Fantastic results!!!!!! WTG!!!!!

Great job!
