  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

Oh did you mail that gauge set out today?? just curious...i took a better look at those crash bars.. you might be able to actually get them to look pretty good, but not if you leave em chrome...you wanted those the superbike bars and a set of headlight ears right??
 
Wait you said its a FIVE speed? WTF gives? Why do 550's and 650's get six speed gear boxes then?


I have a thought...perhaps it was to increase the torque curve...and to keep the RPMs lower since the displacement was smaller...dunno..my lil KZ440 and the XS400 only have 5 speeds in em...but they are in no way highway bikes...

Sorry buddy I got caught up with things at college again. Damn teachers and wanting so much homework. Tomorrow is my "easy" day so for sure I'll have it at the post by morning. And yes I want them both. Superbars especially. Although I took a look at the headlight I got now and it looks like it doesn't have a way to mount with headlight ears. Its an aftermarket HELLA headlight. Any leads where I can pick up a full headlight assembly? One that's cheap but tasteful?

Torque curve maybe. But to keep the RPMs down I don't think so. Smaller displacement motors don't make torque OR power down low. Usually they're geared high with a 5 speed box so that when travellling at high speeds the engine is turning at a nice mid-RPM to make enough power to keep it moving. It surprised me that this bike came with a 6 speed trans. The PO told me it had a 5 speed LMAO. He apparently never took it fast enough to get that 6th gear. Plus I'd figure that the 6th gear ratio drop would be a bit to much for this bike but OH WELL. Suzuki did it for a reason
 
They might have gone with the six speed so they could use a bigger sprocket on the rear so it could get off the line but still be able to go down the highway.

Actually that makes pretty good sense. I have a 49 tooth in the back. And it think OEM is supposed to be 50

This is it, but not really correct. The sprocket size really has nothing to do with the number of gears, it is the overall gear ratios that decide that. This includes the primary reduction, the gearbox reduction in each gear and the final drive ratio. The problem with the smaller engine is it makes good power over a smaller rpm range than a bigger engine. To compensate for the narrower operating range, the manufacturer gives it more gears to cover the expected range of road speeds. This is the same reason that big diesel trucks (Kenworth, etc.) have ~15 gears. They have a very narrow rpm range to work with, so they need a lot of closely spaced gears to work from a stop up to highway speeds.

awesome someone who knows what they are talking about...hehehe Thanks Mark! Im no engineer, and a shadetree mechanic at best most times...if it breaks, i can probably fix it, why it broke, how it broke or sometimes what i do to fix it, idunno..lol

Sweet deal man! Ill try and get those bars..and..well bars...out to you tomorrow or saturday, if not then, definately Monday (pm me your address btw) You might get a free grip if i cant find a way to get it off without f-ing up the chrome on the bars...it will not come off for anything ive tried yet. Jets came today, YAY..intake rings not yet prolly tomorrow. They came USPS so i should expect an extra day..god forbid they be quick yanno. If the rain holds out on sunday i can prolly get those rings in..provided i can get the damn intake bolts out..they arent rusty, but they are on there GOOD. and a couple are kinda awkward to get at. Once i get a good idea that my carburation issues are at least close to sorted out, im gonna shut it down for winter, pull the motor and take her down to the manhole for a good cleaning, gasket change, and general going over. I still hope to find and purchase a better/newer/mechanically sound 2v motor over the winter. But we'll see what happens. Oh and thanks to a couple other GSR members ill soon have a couple of other tanks to play with...gonna try my hand at knee inserts on one for sure. Thats about it on this end..
 
I hear them bolts are a pain in the ass! Probably gonna have to impact them out. Lol that made no sense. In other words put the screwdriver in and tap it with a hammer to loosen the bolts. Works everytime. But if for some reason god hates you that much and they're still stuck use some visegrips. Visegrips fix everything! They're like Ducttape. Man's best friend lol. Dude pics of the process of banging in those knee inserts!

Sucks because I didn't get to wrench on the bike today. My eta for running down the road for the first time was the weekend but now I think thats gonna be pushed back to next weekend. Alot of things to do but its all coming together quickly.... And once again the carbs are proving to be annoying. The new ones I got well they got the same problem as the old ones. I think I may just have to take it to a machine shop to drill out the idle air screws. They're getting stuck and they strip insanely easy. Well atleast this way I know what to do and won't screw them up.

BTW do you know any good solvents to dip the carbs in? I took some advice from this forum and dipped them in Berryman's Chem dip but now they turn black and the black doesn't wash off! I think I need to dip them in something else to get em clean now because the black has a consistency of like a slimey film
 
I had the same issue with it...you actually have to wash them off with water and use compressed air to dry em and get all the nooks and crannys...Qtips...that helps on the bodies...rub em down real good too..itll come off...
 
Hmm I guess I'll take another stab at it. If i still have bad luck afterwards I'll just have em dipped at a machine shop.

Well in my attempts to get my friends into riding I've either failed horribly or succeeded.... depending on how you look at it. One of my friend's has decided to buy a Ruckus. Right now I'm looking at ways to hop up the motor and void that warranty :evil: :)

Seriously though those things look kinda fun. And the probably get like 1000 miles to the gallon
 
Well I have good news to report. Apparently my stupidity is evergrowing! When I last checked the clearances on the valves it turns out that I wasn't using feelers in mm, turns out they were in inches. DOH! Ever try sticking a .03 INCH feeler in there. It won't go in for the life of you. So yeah I realized this when I was buying a new set of feelers. I checked em out this morning and YAY everything is in spec. Now I just gotta get an exhaust bolt removed and the engine is ready to go back in
 
Finally got around to getting those intake flanges off. All I can say is wow. First off my homemade Impact consisting of a BIGASS screwdriver and a heavy hammer did nothing to those bolts. I knew I met my match early on so I had to borrow an actual impact SD from my uncle. Each bolt came off with nothing more than a few brute force taps what i came to find afterwards was a complete surprise. (well not really). Those intake O-rings were FVCKED. Like no **** the bike would've run like ass had I tried running it without fixing them. Not to mention how brittle they were. Most of them broke into pieces as I took them off. Luckily I ordered the new ones last night. They should be getting here by post soon!
 
Ruh roh Shaggy..looks like im in store for a chore...hehe..got an impact driver tho..i think one of my heads for it is broke...Dunno who did that 8-[
If yours is an 81, and mines a 77, maybe ill get a handfull of dust...lol My rings came today..but i just got home from work a bit ago.. and of course its dark. Good times...
 
Cool hope fully that will fix a lot of your problems. I haven't had any time to work on my bike.
