A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hey guys, I am putting on a new RK sealed chain on my 1100. I have done this before several times and have used a clip type master link. I have been able to do it without any special tools. Well up to now that is. I cannot get the masterlink sideplates to compress enough to get the clip in. I did it with the DID chian I had on there before. Am I forgetting something or do the RK chains just have a tighter tolerance?

Hap
coming up with new ideas for the old chain!

I could come up with some creative, innovative ideas on what to do about the old chain...

...but I won't.

Hap,
I ran into the same thing when I put a new Tsubaki chain on my 550. My buddy who is a mechanic told me to assemble the sideplate on the master link, then place a socket over each pin. The socket must be just big enough to go over each pin. Use a couple of C-clamps to press the socket/sideplate down.

I did this, but I could not use two C-clamps at the same time, so I did one pin at a time, tightening just a little bit over one pin, then going to the other. I think it took 3 or four times switching back and forth on the pins to get the plate pressed tightly. This way you don't put too much pressure at once and bind the plate and pins.

Once the plate was on and I got the spring clip on, I took a pair of needlenose pliers, put the nose inbetween the sideplates, and pulled the pliers open, placing pressure on the spring clip. This takes some pressure off the o-rings and made them look like the rest (with the plate pressed all the way on, the o-rings are smooshed too much).

Hope that helps.

I'm not Hap, but good suggestions...This ought to go in the Tips forum.
Thanks.

That is exactly how I did ti the side plates on RK are very tight fitting

I don't think this was one of the creative ideas for the old chain. 8)

Hey Hap,

You got the first bit right, but the second bit wrong.

First - you take off the old chain.
Second - you fit a shaft drive.

Deer hunting?

I guess that means something in the US, but not out here in Oz.
Maybe just as well. :D

Hap is referring to the Bambicide that took the life of a big bad doe back in late December. The owner of the GK that survived the hit is now almost 100%, whereas the doe bit the dust and is now being eaten. (Ground venison is great on spaghetti sauce!) The GK has now been hybridized, as you can see in the Gallery on this site, under 1984.

Glad to have helped, Hap.

I must say though, I have now moved on to a shaft drive (83 GS850GLD). The maintainence on the shaft drive is so much easier.

There are m m m m millions of them all over North America.

You can hunt them with a shaft or chain... but projectile weapons are preferrable... (hunting rifle, bow, black powder rifle)

Tasty too.

For you folks down under they are just like the roo's. They are everywere, they eat everything, and they run out in the road in front of you and stop and stand there. 8O AKA, Forest Rats I prefer to use my 30-06 on them, rather than my bike. Alot less painful, for me anyway. Safe Riding, Bill
