A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Thoughts about the website in general

Recently, I've invested a ton of time reworking the code that runs the website. In the course of doing that I took a good look at the data that is being stored in the databases. I felt that this would be a good barometer to see where the website stands today, in term of site visitors, when compared to our early days. And as you can probably guess, site visits have fallen off quite a bit from the high point in the mid 2000's.

There could be many reasons for this. One, us dinosaurs are dying off. When I bought my first GS in 1976 I was 19 years old. I'm soon to be 69 years old. And most people that bought them were a bit older. I say all this to state that our visitors are dying off. Unfortunately we can't stop Father Time.

The next thing that comes to mind is the age of our GS's. Again, if I look our bikes, the first GS came out in 1976. That's 50 years ago. That a heck of a long time for any vehicle, never mind a motorcycle. There are less and less around. Thankfully this website and a lot of the fantastic visitors over the years, did their part in keeping them around for as long as they have.

When I total up the contributions for the last couple of months this weekend, this will be another indicator in how well things are going. As you may or may not know, this website runs on the contributions that everyone makes. Once it ceases to be self-funding, then it shuts down. It takes about $115 a month to run it, not including the extras that come with it over the course of the year. So there is a bit of concern there. And advertising is not an option to pick up the slack. We had that in our early days. I hated it then and I really hate it now since everyone today wants to be in your business.

One idea is to open a new forum so people can sell other bikes other than just GS's, in the forum. The reasoning being that most GS's owners may own other bikes that they want to sell. Of course I can see this segueing into a For Sale part for other bikes. We don't do that now but is that a good idea in order to be more tolerant of out old GS or ex-GS owners?

I say this all because it's been on my mind a bit lately. Let me know what you think about all this.

Hi Frank, I’m all for having a for sale category for other brands on here. Like you are saying, most all of us here own or have owned other brands of bikes, and non GS Suzuki’s. I might be a bit biased though, as I own 10 different brands of bikes 😂
Thanks again for all your work here, keeping the GS flame burning.
Joe

I think opening the site up to non GS bikes is a great idea for all the reasons you stated plus this. I came here after buying my old 1980 GS850G but stay around because through this site and on rides and get togethers I have met some of the BEST people I know.

Maybe do some separate forum titles?
Honda
Suzuki
Yamaha
Kawasaki
BMW
etc etc.....

Like others have said, thank you for all that you do to keep the best motorcycle forum going....much appreciated. :)

I don't think opening this site to sell other brands will increase traffic, other than maybe a tiny bit. It will be the same members here selling, and only members will see the ads. Most selling traffic these days is on Marketplace and Craigslist.

Yes, the sales of other bike we can already do in the "other bikes" section.
Lets do Brand specific sub forums :)

I think some more engagement on the Facebook group (and other classic Suzuki groups for that matter) would drive some traffic here. I see people asking for tips everyday on there and lots of times the advice is not really great. Sometimes it's spot on, but that usually comes from someone that is on this forum and they sometimes direct people here with a link or to the BikeCliff site.

I don't think I've ever just seen an engagement post from the "owner" of the group whoever that is. Always just a question from someone random. Even some Reels with common problems and a link to the site/forum might help.

Maybe some sort of standard response directing them to the forum for all posts made to the Facebook group??

There's a lot of topics that come up all the time where all the answers are here.

I might me a bit elitist in saying it but I don't see mopeds, trikes and 4-wheelers being on this site.

I agree with this to a certain point. While I don't really see having brand specific forums being a tool to increase site traffic, In my opinion that bang for the buck, or I should say the benefit to my time and effort, just wouldn't be worth there. On the other hand I do see where just adding a "any bike other than a GS" For Sale forum as being a benefit. It wouldn't be meant to compete with Craigslist and Marketplace for outsiders traffic but instead cater to the GS'ers that hang out here and own other bikes that they would like to sell. Maybe add a Wanted forum also but I couldn't see much more than that.

I'm just not convinced that having model specific forums would be worth the time and trouble. For one thing ow do you break it by models and where do you stop. There are a ton of different bike models out there. I also think that things would be too segmented to be useful. For the small amount of people using it (that's my assumption anyway), I'm more in favor of just one For Sale and Wanted forum for other bikes.

So why do you think a breakout by model is better?

marvinsc and some others run the (unaffiliated as best I can tell) FB page of the same name, thegsresources.com. I and many others do try to direct folks who post questions there to here and to BikeCliff's, especially when answers form the peanut gallery get especially stupid. And boy, do they. My guess is, most of the people we nudge to visit here, may come here, but probably don't sign up, don't engage, just lurk. If you look at "Who's Online", typically its' about 10 members and about 6000 or so "guests".

Many folks visit and post questions and items for sale/wanted on the various Suzuki, GS FB pages, I don't know how we get them to come here and engage.

Thanks for the reply. I definitely can see the benefit of reaching out via Facebook but there is that thing called time, which I suffer from a serious lack of. From my end I have to prioritize my free time. At this point it means "keeping the lights on" here. Now for anyone who frequents both TGSR and Facebook then please, do give us a mention. This website has accumulated 31 years of expertise, offering valuable insights for anyone seeking answers about GS's.

I just wanted to thank everyone for their responses. From my end of things, being buried behind code for 2 months, it was looking like we were suffering from a lack of activity. I'm glad that I was proven wrong.

Hi Frank, I'm not suggesting "model" specific but "Brand" (think Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, BMW...etc...) specific. Big difference.
And I think it would be quite busy area as almost everyone here that owns a GS owns another brand of motorcycle to talk about.
Btw why can't I quote your post?
Cheers

I give you, Scott and the others two thumbs up for getting the word out there, Much appreciated!!!

As for getting people to engage, some just are not going to, no matter what you say or do. How do I know? My wife and I teach at Sunday School for 4th and 5th graders. Some won't participate, no matter what. Sometimes it's peer pressure (boys won't dance) and sometimes it's sheer laziness (i don't want to, I'm too tired), but it's just the way it is. But I certainly appreciate the effort!

To clarify, The GS Resources Facebook page was started many years ago by the late Adam Reinke as a place for GSers to communicate when the GSR site was down for whatever reason. As years have passed and FB algorithms have morphed the page has gone international. We generally try to steer people here, especially when they have Technical and Maintenance questions.
