    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Good job of putting on some serious miles.
I hope that you are taking plenty of time to stop and enjoy the ride.
Now that you have made it to Denver, the rest of your trip will be some of the most beautiful parts of this country.
Except for the two flat/boring states that tend to make you cut a wrist before you escape. ;)

VERY wise to carry a spare r/r. I did the same when I rode the length of Rte 66 and was glad I did. Wound up replacing it in AZ. Good looking package you've got there. Functional yet attractive. Thanks for posting the pics.

Wow. already half the freakin way there! I guess it's a little late for the sage words I wanted to impart - remember that 'performance award' you were cited with on the way back from my house? Do -not- do that out of state.

Allie I most certainly do not want any performance awards. Lucky for me the speed limit on some of these midwest back roads is 65. Not much need to go faster than that except for that bit of highway into Denver trying to split the gap between two huge storms, I can report that my luggage system is very well attached as I was running 85 with high winds and the bike still felt good! Looking forward to crossing the rockies and eventually the west coast!

Update, update, update!

We heard from Tim and his brother today.
He left a message while I was gone looking at a bike and trying to find a Riding Game tag.
I called him as soon as I got home (7:30 PST) and left a message.
A few minutes later he called me back!
His bike has developed a terrible oil leak sometime around Denver. :eek:
He and his brother are currently about a hundred miles south of Salt Lake City, Utah.
They are going to try to make it here at my place by tomorrow night and see if we can make some repairs.
They are about 500 miles away. Wish them success please! :pray:

She'll be right Eric, it's an air cooled GS :p

He just needs to improvise like one of those Scott oilers for chains but have an oil bottle feeding the engine... hhaha

Fingers crossed you make it safe and sound Tim! Hopefully you can get her buttoned up enough to enjoy the rest of your trip.

Damn to bad luck!
Hope he has enough oil to make it for repairs and the leak isn't too serious.

For some crazy reason, I have one or two COMPLETE 850 engine gasket kits around here.:confused: ;)
I don't even own ONE anymore! :rolleyes:
(You never know when one might follow you home though. ;) )
Or come for a visit.

They have successfully made it to Fallon, NV. and should make it here in 90-100 minutes.
They sound like they are in good spirits and ready for some food and showers.

That's really good news, be good for them to take a break from riding, get the bike fixed and chow down.
I drove cross country once in late June '79, my clothes were just covered with bugs, sweat and road grime, and the one thing I wanted most was a shave and shower.

We Made It

We are at Eric's house now and just finished a great dinner. A shower is up next for sure. It was a hard ride to get here from Utah when we left this morning, did a total of 670 miles today, longest day yet.

Pete I had thought of that for a Bike IV set up, but I was able to manage with just keeping a close eye on it and adding oil when needed.

Having a blast so far with this trip, covered about 2700 miles thus far. Cant wait to get the bike fixed up tomorrow and continue to the coast!

Glad to hear you made it safe Tim! And good on ya' Eric for giving the guys somewhere to go have a shower and a feed and get some help with their bikes... that's why I love this forum :D

And Tim, I'm sure the IV would've drawn some... errr... interesting attention if you needed it... hahaha
 
As much as we would like to see further updates, we might not get anymore updates for awhile, Eric can't seem to get logged on to this site.
Maybe he was a victim of that doomsday malware which hit yesterday, but he posted last night and that hit earlier in the day.
 
Update!
We are busy replacing the leaky real gasket cam cover gasket and adjusting the valves.
The tach drive is leaking out of the cable and we are going to replace both seals and the cable.

Just got finished playing with Eric in his garage, and we fixed many things. New valve cover gasket, as the real-gasket I had on there was cracked and completely destroyed :eek:.
We also replaced the tach seals and cable as they were fubar as well. Of course while doing this Kyle snapped the bolt holding the tach retaining clip, and so we spent a good deal trying to get that out.
After every attempt failed we ended up drilling it out and tapping it one size bigger.

We also replaced the rear brake pads as the oil leak had wrecked those. And Eric drained and refilled the front break fluid as well. Ended up checking valve clearances and replaced 6 shims:cool:
Now the bike is running much better and should be leak free for many miles!

Next up Eric and I are gonna head into Lake Tahoe and finally make it into California!!
