A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

hi all i feel funny asking this :( but i replaced my points ign some 15 yrs ago with the dyna 3 ignition. i have just replaced that original engine with a 8000 mile unit and am swapping over the dyna 3 igntion to that motor. my question is where is the timing mark on the gs 1000 mtr. :?: i have the factory manual and it shows a slash mark by the top hole in the ign plate. i dont have A MARK! i checked the old mtr ,doesnt have one either! was the timing mark on the points plate ? [ITS long gone] suggestions?

the timing mark is on a small metal plate that aligns with the three screws that hold the cover on. it goes behind the point/dyna plate before you screw it in.

sounds like you lost yours in the swap...i guess i would try looking on ebay.

I NEED ONE!

I NEED ONE!

DOES ANY ONE OUT THERE HAVE THE PLATE THAT WAS DESCRIBED? FROM ONE THAT WAS CONVERTED OR IS BEING DONE NOW? PLEASE E-MAIL OR CALL ME . RLNELSON@ATTG.NET OR 651-450-0697 WOULD BE OFF A 78 GS 1000 WITH POINTS THANKS p.s. failing anybody having one could some one copy or trace the plate out. i could make one if i have something to work with.

the timing mark plate from a 550, 750, or 1000 would probably work.

If everything else fails find the top dead center with a degree wheel and a plug stop or dial indicator. Once you have found tdc you can make a small plate and mark it.

The timing marks are on the base plate that the advance counterweights are mounted on. The timing mark on the engine case should be at aproximately the left edge of the 12 oclock screw head on the base plate.
