    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Tires/Tyres for 1983 GS450A Suzukimatic?

My 32 year old tyres are getting low on the front end and have been looking to source a replacement for the 3.60-18 IRC that's on the wheel.

Seems that 3.60-18 is a rare bird these days so 3.50-18 is more common or perhaps even 100/90-18?

I've read a few reviews about Shinko and they seem to be viewed positively.

I'm happy to hear about any recommendations or suggestions

Sounds good all around. 100/90-18 would be the correct conversion, and the Shinko 712 is a fantastic tire. Make sure you replace the tube and rim strip as well.

One potential issue is that the rear tire, originally 4.60-16, equates to a 120/90-16. There are very few choices in this size, so if you want a matching set, the IRC Durotour would be the best choice. (You can also get the Kenda Challenger in these sizes, but they're truly abysmal tires.).

Some people stuff a 130/90-16 on there (very common size), but the rim is much too narrow and it goofs up the tire profile and the handling.

Despite the ground-ripping torque of the mighty 450A ;) , I don't think you need to worry overmuch about matching brands if it's inconvenient. However with any motorcycle I would much prefer to have fresh rubber on both ends, especially if the rear is more than three years old.
 
I was thinking about trying to find another Shinko tyre to fit the rear end if possible but as you mentioned, it seems that it's a 130/90-16 option for that....
 
I know it might seem like a huge hassle, but for handling sake it is pretty easy to lace up a wider rim to fit the proper tire (assuming your 450 has spoke wheels). A slightly wider 16" rim should be easy to find and use the same spokes, or with a little research (and $) you can lace up an 18" rim.

Just something to think about.....

Must admit I didn't even consider changing the rim - I'll probably just go with the standard spoked wheel and whatever tyre I can pick up for now but that's always a thought for the future :)
 
If at all possible, try to avoid stuffing a 130 tire in there.

By the way, your use of "tyre" hints that you are not in the USA, and there is nothing in your profile to indicate where you are. If you update your profile to show your location, someone that is (relatively) close to you might be able to make more-educated guesses to solve your problem.
