...and I'm two for two in purchasing S's that have been hot rodded.:)

Cylinder bores measure at about 76mm (stock is 70). Pistons are MTC. Anyone venture to guess on compression?

Cams are ?? Lumpy enough to require profiling of the head at the valve buckets.

Lastly, the intake valves are oversized. I have no idea what size but they look pretty big.

The PO just installed a new starter clutch, which made a nasty click noise the first time the engine turned over. Obviously this thing has good compression.

All this stuff is kind of fun but honestly, all I want is a stock engine. Going to most likely sell off these parts to fund a stock rebuild.

Oh, and notice that O-ring. Can you say oil leak?

Lucky you all those good parts for FREE!! You should PM Bruce & see if he will trade you some of his stock parts from his 1000. Ray.

Set them on the shelf for now.
Could use that head with the bigger valves, does it have VM sized intakes or CV sized intakes?

It's a 1980 head so it has the CV sized ports. I'm going to pull the valves out today and look at the ports to see if anyone has gone in there with a grinder.

Geez, a 1176cc GS1000? Is that streetable or is it dragstrip/roadrace only? I'd assume you'd need aftermarket sleeves to make this work? And how common was it to go this big back in the day?

I am definitely interested in that head, how big are those valves?

Interested in the cylinder and pistons.
I also have stock 1000 parts.
Might still have a stock head as well.
Do the cams have a stamping on the end? I might wish to have them also.

Eric

Pulled the valves out. Intake valves are 2 mm oversized and backcut. The valve guides are nice and tight - the odometer says 6000 miles.

Jim,
A stock 1000 has enough power for me, it's hard enough already keeping the speed down. Plus I'm hoping to save some money on the build by selling off these hot rod parts - stock parts are cheap in comparison.

Put that engine back together and slowly walk away.
Sell it complete and find another engine.
:-\\\

thats a lot of carbon /oil buildup for only 6k:confused:

I agree but my 850 only has 4000 miles (and I know that one is right) and the intake valves have deposit build up too so I think its normal. The deposits are fairly soft and fluffy, not that super hard and caked on build up that valves get after a lot of miles. The speedo could be wrong I suppose but it doesn't look tampered with and 1000S speedos are rare so it's unlikely anyone messed with it.

Ed,

I can pull my spare motor and ship it to you

You can just put all those parts in the box and send it back to me!

1979 and 1980 GS1000S were 8V motors. 1982 GS1000SZ Katana was the second generation 16V motor.

Just figured out that these cams are identical to those from my first S engine... http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=135571

Never did figure out who made them but I think they are fine for shim over bucket since the lift seems to be under the threashhold.

Regarding these parts, a number of people have shot me PM's with trade offers but I'm a little overwhelmed right now. I'm interested in doing a trade but please understand that I'm restoring this 1000S so I'd like to find the right parts for this bike plus untimately these parts should be worth more than stock parts so I'd like to gather a little cash in addition to a trade.

What I'm willing to trade for is:

- Large port CV carb type head. The head I already have is in good shape so I'll just reuse it unless anyone has a low mileage (20k miles or less) CV type head they can offer plus some cash. Sorry, I know this sounds selfish but I can't see any good reason to install a VM carb head or one that's in worse condition than this one.

- Stock bore cylinder w/pistons - cylinder should have the extra bolt on the front (the '78 1000 cylinders don't have this and I'm not sure about '79 either). Again, looking for something with less than 20k miles that's in good condition - no broken fins or anything.

Again, please forgive for this selfish attitude, but hope you guys understand. As an aside, how much do you guys think this cylinder and pistons are worth? They look to be in good condition with no evidence of blow by on the piston skirts.
