    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Transmission and final drive ratios.

I didn't have any luck searching on this.
Anyone know what the individual gear ratios and final drive are for my bike?
 
I have an 82GL850 five speed and the owners manual lists

Primary reduction 1.775, Gear Ratios 1st 2.5. 2nd 1.722, 3rd 1.380, 4th 1.125 and 5th 0.923. The secondary reduction is 1.062 and Final Reduction is 3.090.
For reference my bike at 55 mph turns 4000 RPM. Hope this helps.

The above info is correct for "L" model 850's beginning in '82 with the GS850GLZ when Suzuki fitted a 16" rear wheel (instead of a 17" wheel). Prior to that time, however, the 850G's and the 850GL's had the same size rear tires and the same transmission ratios.
The ratios were:
Primary reduction 1.775, Gear ratios, 1st 2.500, 2nd 1.777, 3rd 1.380, 4th 1.125, 5th 0.961. These have been the ratios for every model year standard, non-L, GS850G, '79-'83.

When Suzuki fitted the 16" rear tire to the 82 and later "L" models, they subtracted 1 tooth from the 2nd and 5th Drive gears in an effort, I think, to compensate for the smaller rear tire. The result was a taller 2nd and 5th gear.

If you ever have to go into the transmission, you can replace the 5th gears with the ones for an 82 or later "L" model and get a 4% overdrive, but be sure to replace both the Drive and the Driven gear at the same time.

Being a car guy, I'm a bit unfamiliar with the primary and secondary reduction. Does this mean there are gears between the engine and transmission, and again between the transmission and final drive?
 
There is a power shaft and a driven output shaft. It is not all that different from a car transmission really.The one difference is a built in backlash that softens the transfer of power. This provides a little bit of slack in the output shaft, duplicating the slack in a chain nicely.
