    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Transmission drops out of 5th gear

Hey guys its finally getting warm here in Michigan and I want to do some work on the bike. Its a 1982 GS1100E that I bought last spring. The problem started out intermittently, every once in a while on the highway it would drop from 5th to 4th. Near the end of the season it got so bad as soon I let the clutch out it would drop immediately! Ive done some research and cant find anyone else with this problem, could it be as simple as worn shift forks, or something worse?
 
Not sure about your engine, whether selector forks can be replaced from the side, without a major stripdown. If you're lucky and they can and that's the problem, then that's fine.
On the other hand, worn dogs on the gear display exactly the same symptoms - doing it a bit, then more, then all the time. Replacing the gear is major stripdown.
For that, you can thank the clutchless-changer ***** of a previous owner.
 
It may be the transmission which requires a splitting of the cases but my money is on the shifter linkage. Try greasing and adjusting them.
Fifth gear hardly wears out.
Any chance you have big feet and you bought new boots that are wider?

I was referring to the shifter linkage on the other side. Much easier to access! :D

I hope thats it! I do have large feet, size 13 wide, how would that affect it?

Thanks for the pic Tom! How do I access that? Im guessing the adjustment procedure will be in my Haynes manual?

After fourth remove your foot from the shifter so it can center and then try fifth.
 
The shifter linkage is the part that goes from where you shift with your foot to the frame. it is right there so you don't have to take anything apart.
