    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Ok guys since I got my problems figured out I figured it was time for a new thread. I've got bent valves on cylinders 1 & 4 from jumping time. I'm trying to find somewhere that will do a good job on re lapping and cutting new valve seats on my 1980 gs1100 head. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Also I'm curious if I pull the cylinders to replace the base gasket can I go ahead and replace the piston rings right there? Just sounds like a good peecaution if they are easily accessible.
 
Yes, replace the rings and bottle brush hone the cylinder.

How many miles on the head, and what makes you think the seats need to be recut? Suzuki uses high quality parts on these bikes and a simple lapping job typically is good enough to clean up the valves and seats unless the engine has seen high mileage.

Oh, and OEM gaskets are superior to aftermarket, and are strongly advised.

As for where to send the head, I'm not sure other than to suggest APE. Not cheap, particularly when you figure on shipping costs too.
 
Thanks a lot you guys are awesome! Now do I need to replace that valve when I use it to lap with? Also do I need to use the bent valbea or I'm assuming use the new valves to lap cylinders 1 & 4? And judging by experience what is the best way to clean the carbon off the pistons and head?
 
Each individual valve needs to be lapped to it's original seat. The parts wear together and form a matched pair. Obviously though, the bent valves need to be replaced. You might want to consider taking all the valves to a machine shop and have them faced to clean them up. Should only cost a few bucks each. After that the only thing you need to do is lap the parts together to clean up the seats.
 
Ok so when I go to put the cylinder jug back on how is that gonna work? Do I need 4 ring compressors? And what do you mean by bottle brush?
 
2 ring compressors, or hose clamps will work as well.

Bottle brush = ball style cylinder hone.
 
Ok, I've never done any honing so is there anything special I need to know?

Chuck has this one covered. RESEARCH your topic before beginning. The archives here is a great resource, and there is a ton of information about all aspects of head repair, cylinder honing, etc. on the internet.
