A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

A while back I bought a 79gs 1000. It had been on fire under he seat which destroyed the wiring harness. The PO had tried to rewire it but made a mess. I am trying to get it to run to check it out before I through a lot of money replacing a lot of parts. I did find one coil was bad and the other one is firing but it looks a little weak. As I was trying to simplify the ignition wiring I found the a white and blue wire going to what I think is the rectifier. My question is, can the bike be made to run with the wire broken loose or is that only for the charging system?
My plan is to get it running and because of its over all poor condition, chopping it and simplifying everything I can. Thanks.

First of all,

Next, the only white/blue wire that I am aware of is between the stator and the rectifier. If that is disconnected, you will not have all of your charging ability available. These bikes have little enough in reserve, it will need to be connected.

I have my lawn mower battery hooked to it right now. If the wire is unhooked it still should run just not charge? I am thinking I will need to replace the points and condensers. I would like to simplify everything as much as possible. Would it be more economical in the long run to convert to Dyna ignition?
