A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I was looking to order a chain for my 82 GS450TX. It looks like I need a 530 104 link chain. I was looking around on ebay and saw several listings that said non o-ring style chains and others that did not. What chain do I need? If there are variations or styles of chains, is some better than the rest?

O rings are far better than no rings. X rings are better than O rings.

Some are stronger and have a higher tensile strength.
Most chains have o-rings I think. At least I have not seen any on shelves hereabouts for years.

Go to the Regina chains website and you can see their tensile strength and application charts. You do not have a super powerful engine and do not need a super expensive chain for the bike,

I had a super expensive chain and it lasted a really long time. At the end of its life it was still heavier ( due to thicker sideplates no doubt ) to my new el cheapo brand chain.

I've been running $40 non-ring chains the last 2 years and they have held up well, averaging 4k miles till it's worn out. I Figure this chain should last much longer than that.

Should be about 6 times as long.

don't forget to look into getting new sprockets too.... Maybe that's how you killed the old chain. As Tkent_02 sez, 4kmiles is not very good at all, even if you mean per year.

At a minimum. With a 450, I suggest a properly maintained o-ring or x-ring chain should go 40-50k miles.
I put 15k semi-aggressive miles on my 1100E and adjusted the chain twice.
