A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have an '82 GS450 and need new rear shocks. The symptoms are that the current shocks work - ok - but when I go 2up (with my 12 year old) they don't hold the total weight at all.

I'm looking for a shock that will hold 1up (me + luggage rack= 250#) AND be able to do well when I go 2up with the second person weighing about 150#. (about 350# total)

How do I figure out which shock to purchase?

I'm assuming a progressive spring shock is what's needed, but am open to suggestions.

Thanks!!!

any decent shocks with good adjustment range would help, i would guess the range available for a GS450 will be quite limited.

but i may be wrong...........

Don't think shocks would be too hard to find. You just need some 13" eye-to-eye. Progressive brand shocks are popular, they call for the 12-1202B and either 03-1394 or 03-1367 springs (the latter being the "heavy duty" springs). Probably be about $200 for a set. They would be pre-load adjustable. Hagons are also a popular choice; if you call Dave Quinn Motorcycles and tell them about your bike and loading requirements they ought to be able to set up what you need.

Sorry, forgot to post the link to the Progressive product selection for your bike

I'd check out Hagon
http://www.hagonshocksusa.com/HagApps7.htm

They offer a progressive type spring with even their most basic twin shocks, + preload adjustment, which you will need if you are adding 100lbs with a second rider. They offer a shock setup specific to your 450, but they also do variations in spring stiffness and damping for various customer needs.

you are looking at about $200 + +
