    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

After a ton of searching I happened across a problem very similar to mine. Here it is:

My 86 GS550L would run fine for a 15 minutes or so and then abruptly die. Attempts to restart would fail until the bike cooled for a while. It appeared to be electrical and I tested the ignitor and signal generator (as well as a charging test). Both the ignitor and SG test did not produce the desire result, but I may have done them wrong (don't think so though). A can of freeze revealed that spraying the SG would permit the bike to start, but shortly after it would again fail.
I purchased a salvage replacement for the ignitor and SG. Replacing the ignitor and then test-riding resulted in the same original problem. Replacing the SG corrected the problem. Having taken a local test ride without incident I later took a longer 30 mile ride. No problems. Went home, parked.
Next night, I attempted to start bike... no luck. Pulled the plugs and checked for spark-- no spark... Check all connections, removed plugs and reseated-- no spark... Occasionally I will get a single spark, but then none. Battery is fully charged.
Could the replacement SG have been faulty as well? Could there be another component that would case the SG to fail? I purchased the SG at a shop that stated if it die shortly after installing, they would send another. I will try that route, however, I am concerned that another component could be killing this part.

As I originally thought, turns out the Signal Generator was the guilty part. Unfortunately, the first replacement part (used) I received failed after thirty miles. This made me think perhaps the ignitor was also partially at fault and resulting in the SG failing. I received a replacement ignitor and SG and replaced both. All worked immediately after and I have added about 300mi without difficulty.

I'm having the same problem, and have already replaced the igniter once. Now, I tested both igniter's according to the table in the Haynes manual which gives the proper resistance settings between each tab on the igniter, and both igniter's failed with almost exactly the same readings, and with power going to leads that shouldn't, and no power going to most of the leads that should. Would both igniter's fail in the same way, and could it be the signal generator causing the failure of the igniter?

Assuming both igniters are bad and have failed in the same way, where can I get one? No one on ebay has them. I don't believe a Dyna-S system exists for an '85 GS550E. What can I do to get this running again?
 
You mat be not solving the actual problem, I think you have a resistance problem, most likely a/or several corroded or broken wires, if you original ignitor and SG are still working, fit them and resistance test ALL the wiring in the ignition system; including the ignition switch and run switch. Do these test before you start the bike, now start the bike and run it till it cuts, immediately re- run the resistance tests. Compare the results to track it down. after you have that solved, then fit your replacement parts and let us know.

Bike has stopped starting at all. Like the post above, I might be able to get a single spark, but it won't catch and won't start. The resistance while testing JUST the igniter(both of them, off of the bike) reads as a failed component in the Haynes manual. But they both fail in the exact same way.

Which means the same "other" problem has killed both of them, trace and test your wiring harness, particular attention to EVERY connector on the bike.
