  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. Unknown washer in GS400 swingarm

Just want to clarify this is my first post. I used the search function but may have missed something.

So my dad recently gave me his 78' GS400 (my first bike) that hasn't been ridden since he estimates 1983. Regardless, I've been going through it and over the past few days removed the rear wheel assembly and took off the swingarm to lube the spacers, needle bearings, pivot bolt, etc

I took out the spacers and while i was lubing the needle bearings with my finger I felt a thin washer floating freely in the tube-- it looked to be about the size and thickness of a key ring maybe slightly bigger. Looking at the Clymers manual there were no pieces in the diagram that fit what it was.

Could it have been part of the cage the needle bearings are housed in? And should I be worried? I dismissed it earlier and reattached the swingarm to the frame but now it's troubling me.

Okay, how about a pic of the offending washer?
 
Whatever it is isn't listed on the diagram in the Clymers manual and I couldn't find it on cmsnl.com . I have some garage time tonight that I need to use remove the carbs so I can have them cleaned and synced but if I can get to it I'll try and snap a couple of pics tonight. I'm not even sure if my camera will be able to capture what needs to be seen but I'll try. The "ring" (more of a ring than a washer) was not removable from the swingarm tube I tried to pull it through the bearings after removing all the spacers but it was too big.

I think that its probably the inner wall of the bearing race.

Jeep I think you're right. That is what I originally suspected but I'm new to wrenching and didn't have the technical vocabulary to say that. A few questions:
1. Is it a big deal if the wall is off the bearing race?
2. Can I ride with it like that?
3. Do I need to replace the bearing or can I re-seat it?
 
If it is indeed the inner wall you need to replace it. You needle bearing will start to come apart if you don't. Probably still available through Suzuki
 
Bearings are a tad expensive but I would replace it.

21 bucks or so at alph sports so not bad at all
replace both and forget about them for 36 more years
