A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have a 79 GS1000 and want to update the LH controls (turn signal, headlight) to something more modern. Can someone recommend one that requires minimal rewiring and can you tell me which wires of the old plug go to which wires on the new control?
Thanks.

The wiring is easy to determine using the wiring diagram in the factory manual (available for free download from your friendly neighborhood basscliff).

BTW, the factory LH control is a very nice piece - made from aluminum with a push down to cancel motion for the turn signals. I doubt you will find a nicer piece.

Dennis Kirk has a very nice universal control for $79.99. My brother put one on his mid-70's Guzzi.

Hard to beat the factory piece if it's available, though!

The only reason to change it is if you are doing away with the self canceling feature. SO almost any switch could be adapted as long as it fits the 7/8" bar

Well, I bought one from Mikes XS, because it was only $50 compared to the $100 for a stock one and the internal design is better. The old one has a headlight on/off switch and the new one doesn't. I've got some of the wires figured out but not all of them. Wiring is not my strong suit.

I used gsxr controls and if I remember right, the wires from the new control are the same colour as the old ones, so it was basically cut and splice.
Viola, new controls. I just love the way they move now, so smooth. Controls have definitely improved over the years.

Guys,
I just this year finished a resto of my trusty GS850. I had been looking at the switches with thoughts of replacement myself....fleabay was full of them for a while and I managed to obtain a set left and right.....they really didn't suit the bike.....I laboured over this for a few days then I took off the left took it apart down to the housings.....a few sprays of some trim black from Eastwood and small brush work on the letters that were I guess forged into the housings and I got inspire to do everything on the handlebars....looks better than new.....worth considering if you are into period correct....
