I don't really like to hijack anyone else's thread, but here goes.

Dang if I can find any pics of the complete setup. It looks awesome with the braided SS lines. I did find a picture of the cooler with the fittings installed, and a picture of the oil filter cover with the fittings installed, viewed from between the frame & header. Also I found a 2-part video of how I put this thing together. I have no idea about pressure drop or any other rocket science stuff like that. But I do know that oil flows through the cooler.

Okay, it's showtime!

FYI...my oil cooler is mounted upside down. So I had to fab my lines to cross each other. That actually helps maintain clearance from the hot header pipes.

After all is said and done, I actually don't recommend this. It is a pain in the arse to change the filter. And since there are other sources for oil pressure, at least on my motor, I will likely switch to a more conventional setup in the near future.

Julien, good luck with the project. GO YANKEE'S!

Very cool Tom, why does the copper line have a flare on the one end? Is there something inside the motor that has a male flare on it?? I would like very much to run an oil cooler on my bike but I dont want to starve any part of the motor for oil... How did you know exactly where to drill the hole for the copper line in the cover...did you just mock it with like cardboard or something first...then use that as a template. So that copper line fits into the fitting that you put into the cover....cant be like really tight or sealed I would imagine, and oil still flows thru it ok? I am totally getting myself worked up over this idea....back when I first started the build of my bike I was trying to find info on an oil cooler for a 650-G...didnt find anything.

On the back of the 650G head there are bolts that cap off oil galleys to the cams These might be a source for supply or a return to the engine. The oil filter area is pressurized (as we know) and is probably a lot higher with more volume than the cam galley.

Taking a tap off the drain plug for source and returning it through the cam galley would be my choice. The hold on the head may need to be enlarged:eek: a bit to take a fitting so it might be best to experiment with another head before proceeding to one that counts.
I think an oil pan from a 650G Katana comes close to unobtainium, no doubt they are either very expensive new or discontinued. If I can come up with a kit to do this simply and reliably it would be worth it to put it together and offer it here. Same for the 850s and the rest. Anyone who sits in traffic wishes there was an oil cooler to help keep the blood temperature down on their baby.

Okay Gentlemen,

Here are some pics of the inside of the oil-coolant setup. Remember I did not set-up my bike like that? I bought it like that.

First ? Cover of the oil filter with both tube going to small ?radiator? unit.

Then ? cover off? this is what you first see:

The size of the piece of copper ? 3.3/4 inches

or 9.5 cm

The inside of the oil filter housing ? The piece of copper connects to the lower left piece of copper

The second piece of copper removed ? It has a spring.

Finally, the cover of the filter housing? the piece of copper connects to the big hole on the right side (on this picture)

I hope this helps the wondering minds?.

A good thing, I was having oil leak problems from the front cover, I replaced (again) the o-ring and took my time to make sure that everything was in place before tightening everything and ? happy happy me, the oil leak is gone ? Oh yeah, Oh yeah.
I had the bike run for about 30 minutes and I didn?t see a drop of oil.

The bike is ready to ride? the only thing left if changing the rear tire to match the front one that was changed this weekend but it is not preventing me to ride the bike (big big smile on my face)

And Tom MLC - do not worry about hijacking this thread... I posted a question... and you had the same setup... this is why this forum is so great... so much knowledgeable people with experience...
I still would like to know how many of us have this type of setup?

Friends, it's getting late out here on the left coast, and I just finished packing for a long weekend road trip. I'm heading down to San Diego for the Southwestern GS Rally. I will be out of touch from the forum for several days.

I'll be happy to answer any questions regarding my installation when I return. But just from looking at Julien's pictures I can see the fabrication on the 650 motor is a bit different from the 1000 motor. Same principle though.

Julien, you're a good sport. By the way, Born in the South Bronx. 172st & ??? (can't remember). Moved up near the Bronx Zoo until I was about 5. Then moved up north near Burke Ave & White Plains Road. Grade school was PS41, & Junior High was PS113 (Olinville JHS). I went to High School in Brooklyn. (geez, that was a long time ago...)

How 'bout you?

I have a Kat 650 but I honestly don't know whether the sump is the only difference between the Kat and a 650G.

Anyone who wants to chance it could possibly get a 650 Kat sump off Ebay UK (if the seller will post to USA). - item number 220360719194 which has a very good picture on for bolt locations etc.
