    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hey everyone, I finally got on here. Hello again to those I met at Kevin's BBQ/carb sync party in Portland. So I guess I will start from the beginning for those of you not familiar with my problem. A few months ago my GS300L started bogging down suddenly and randomly. It felt like the engine power was cut in half and then abruptly it would jump back up to full power. It progressively started happening more frequently until about a month ago it pretty much always ran like that and was unridable. If it sat idling in this bogged down state it would often stall. Now it won't even start.

I took the carb to Kevin's party and we cleaned it (it wasn't that dirty though) and he boiled the body in simple green. I put it back on the bike and it still won't start. From this I am assuming the carb is fine. Check!

Today I went through the electrical and tested the signal generator, the coils, and the regulator/rectifier. I am not too good at electrical so I am not too sure as to what my readings meant so I thought I'd post them here for you guys to take a look. I've included what my manual has as the specs.

Coils (both L&R):
Primary winding= 4 ohms Spec: 3-5 ohms
Secondary winding= 12.7K ohms Spec: 22-33K
*This reading was obtained with the plug caps off. When tested with them on the reading jumped all over the place.

Signal Generator:
wires B/Bl - Br= 220 ohms* very jumpy reading (300-1000), not sure on this value
wires B/Bl - G/W= 230 ohms This reading was very clear
Spec for both above: 200-280 ohms

Regulator/Rectifier:
-On all normal direction tests meter read "1"
-On all reverse direction tests meter read around 580 except for R - B/W which was around 980
-Specs: Normal direction= continuity
Reverse direction= no continuity

From what I can see there are no loose connections or other visible problems. If anyone can offer any help or input I would greatly appreciate it.

According to the numbers you report, you have a couple of components out of spec. Do the easy/cheap stuff first. Have you tried new plug caps? Let me roll out the welcome mat for you...

Malority, if the signal gen is out, your bike won't run. Try researching replacements or upgrades for it, as well as the r/r seems the values for it are all wrong.

Anybody else have any ideas?

Thanks for the mega-welcome BassCliff. What items are out of spec? The r/r results should be opposite right? Normal direction should have a reading and reverse should be "1" right? What does it mean when those values are opposite like mine? I guess I will start with new plug caps since I got crazy readings when using the old caps. Any other suggestions?

If the spec is 22K-33K ohms and you are reading 12.7K, I'd say that was out of spec. Am I misreading something? Wouldn't be the first time. I must admit that I'm not pouring over the manual and doing the research. I'm relying on your reports. Check the Odds and Ends page on my website, in the Electrical section, for some good troubleshooting suggestions from some of our smarter members. :D

One of the coils is new and both are reading exactly the same resistance so I found this to be strange.
 
the spec is with the plug caps on thats what your missreading cliff
 
So with the plug caps on I should get a solid sustained reading right? Not just a quick random number and then back to "1" again? Why would the reading be so different with the plug caps off?
 
the plug caps have resistors in them to cut down on radio interference i think they are 5000 Ohm or 5K Ohm caps and it can be jumping because of a bad connection(if there is corrosion on the plug cap or if the leads not touching it right)
