    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Valve adjustmedn GS550

Hey guys

I have the Top-end off from the engine.
Is it possible to do a valve-adjustment when its removed from the engine?
 
I've wondered about that myself. Rotating the cam shafts without the chain... How do you do that?
 
Okay I got it, I'll make a jig to hold the head on a sawhorse. Then take a sprocket and crank from a bicycle and mount underneath on an axle. Then I'll wrap the chain around and use the pedals to rotate the cams slowly. I will put a bicycle seat on the sawhorse for comfort.

On second thought, maybe I'll spend that time and just reassemble the engine!
 
I'm kind of intrigued to see if it's possible now. Not the bicycle sprocket thing, I was just kidding around, but rotating the cams without damaging anything.
I bought a strap wrench which should work if there a spot to wrap it around the cam shafts. I'll try when I get home and see if it works.
 
When you get done fooling around, just be sure to have the cam lobes in the proper positions when measuring your clearances.

Well, the strap wrench was too wide to fit on the gs850 cam. If the wrench was 3/4" wide it may work, assuming it's strong enough!
 
I found a strap that works. It wraps around the sprocket on the cam shaft and rotates it with ease. The strap is like a serpentine belt material, tough stuff. It barely fits in the cam chain tunnel which gets narrow towards the bottom of the head, but it does fit. There is a cam chain guide held on by two bolts that I had to remove from the intake side to get the strap through. Found it at Lowes near the water softeners, item #148976 if you want to search online. Surely the timing will need to be adjusted and there's lots of other worms in this can though! I was planning on tearing down this head anyway but really wanted to be able to get the clearances within specs before putting it all back together.
