A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I'd like to know what the 80 GS850GL has for valve adjustment, screw, or shim? I also need to know what the lash is supposed to be at, and if I'll have any surprises along the way. TIA

It has shim over bucket. Clearance should be .03 to .08 mm.
Toughest part, once you have spare shims and the bucket depressor, is finding a .03mm feeler gauge. Snapon used to sell one.

Thanks, do you know what interval you're supposed to check them?

.03mm & .08mm works out to .001 inch and .003 inch. I used .0015 and .003 feeler gauges because 1) it's what I had, and 2) you don't want too little clearance on a valve. I believe the extra .0005 inch gives a little more safety in the adjustment.

Not to discourage you, but after 20 thousand miles, (850L) I finally checked my valve clearance. Still within specs. I had a Kaw 750 with the shim and bucket arrangement, and there was no discernable change in 40k. Not saying it hurts to check though.

Thanks Gary, that's exactly what I wanted to hear. :D
I think I'm going to leave well enough alone, and take my chances. I've never done the shim style, and it doesn't sound like much fun. Thanks Everyone for the help

No, no fun at all. It's only saving grace is, that it needs less attention than the screw type adjusters. I have those on a Honda, and still get 10k or more between adjustments. I keep my oil changed frequently, less wear means less adjustment. Anyway, if it does concern you, remember that the checking part isn't hard, and if you discover an adjustment is needed, you could always farm out that part of the project to a reliable mechanic. Of course, finding one might be the hardest part of all:)
