    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Valve cover hose

I just noticed I didn't put the hose on from the top of the valve cover to the air box. Can someone tell me what size that hose is, diameter ? Whats it for? .....GS1000 1980 :eek:
 
I dont know the exact diameter but i just used a piece of vacuum line from the auot parts store. Measure the hole in the airbox nipple and get that size ID hose. As for the function. That tube acts as exactly like a PCV valve in your car.. relieves crankcase pressure and it even supplies some engine heat to the airbox. In theory it will help recycle unused combustion gasses and the engine heated air will suppress any "frosting" of the carbs in cold weather. Be sure the wire mesh is under the housing on the cam cover too.. that keeps oil from being sucked up into the tube.

Hi, diameter is 12mm or 1/2''.Its an antipollution thing.
Its like a pcv on an old car or truck.

If I was home, I would simply go out to the garage and look at the label on the hose that I bought.

Since I am about 1000 miles away from home, I will, instead, go to the Alpha Sports site and note that the description says "HOSE, BREATHER (11X15X250)".

I guess that means that it's 11mm inside diameter, 15mm outside diameter and 250mm long.
Alpha's price for that hose is about $30, everyone else's is about $20, but it's better than it seems.
You actually get about 6 FEET of hose, which is much more than the 10 INCHES you need.

If you go to the auto parts store, you might find some 7/16" hose, but it's going to be much thicker-walled and hard to use.

Yes, the auto parts store hose is thicker but I bought some anyway for my bike. No F'ing way I'm paying $20+ for a piece of stink'in hose from Suzuki.:mad::mad::mad:
 
I have some of that suzuki oem valve cover hose floating around if anyone is interested. The OEM hose is thin walled and when new is quite flexible. Any hose you find that fits at local auto parts store will have a fairly thick wall which will become rock hard over time especially in colder climates

Well, obviously I splurged and got the "real stuff". As I mentioned, it's much longer than you need, there is actually enough in there for 6 or 7 bikes, bringing the effective cost down to about $3 per bike. :D

At the same time I "splurged", I kinda went overboard. I also got the proper vent hoses for the carbs, the proper vacuum hose for the petcock and the proper fuel hose. I'm tired of fighting auto parts hoses, the extra money is worth it to me. All of them except the carb vent hose have much more than you need for a single bike.

I'll all for the OE fuel line and vacuum hose, just didn't feel like paying $25 for a length of hose.

So which one of you guys with "extra" valve cleaner hose wants send me a hunk?

Don't think that it's unneeded. It is rather important to have that hose. If you still have a stock airbox, the port on the top of the valve cover should be connected to the airbox. If you have installed individual pods, you should either have a small filer or a catch can on the end of the hose so that unfiltered air does not get into the top of the engine.

By the way, if I don't leave home, I don't work. :eek:

Unfortunately (for you guys), my current job takes me away from home for about four weeks at a time.
